HELP

Post by Penguin »

I downloaded Win 7 AntiSpyware 2011, which is a VIRUS itself. My internet just wouldn't open up without that pop-up. It looked so legit that I bought it. Now my stuff is being checked and my passwords and credit cards have been taken. Plus, I spent 80$ for nothing!

Is there a way to restore my computer to a ''before I installed the virus'' point? It even freezes my typing when I go on the internet, like now.

PLEASE HELP

My credit card has been cancelled...

I'm thinking of buying Norton Anti-Virus (which I know is safe), but will it erase the ''Win 7 AntiSpyware 2011'' virus?

Anyone?

I don't know any computer geeks!!!! And, I don't want to spend a dime.

You could probably do a system restore from Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore, but I highly doubt it will remove everything. Then again, I've only used that feature for XP. I don't even know if 7 has it.

My suggestion would be to download Windows Security Essentials and let that run all the way through. That one's at least free so you don't have to shell out money for McAfee or Norton.

Other than that, just Google search for help. There's computer message boards all over the internet. Somebody will have an answer.

You got Phished bad. That's the worst. System restore and malware bytes. If that doesn't work, scavenge what you can and cleanse that bitch.

You fucked up; reformatting is seriously the best option. It's rarely worth the effort to try to uninstall every shitty piece of malware it might have put on your computer.

First off, probably not your best bet to download anything with the title "Anti-spyware." Usually it's bad.

Second, you're best bet is like Dan said, to start from scratch and reformat it.

Or, third, buy a mac.

Fuck I'm such a noob!

How exactly do I reformat? What is physing? Buying an Anti-Virus won't clear the virus?

I have been looking up stuff online, but I'm completely clueless with all these terms, and I don't trust any random site now. Microsoft Security Essentials didn't do anything.

Just put in your operating system disc, whichever it is, and select the options from there on.

Go to a respected site such as www.cnet.com (type it in your browser, do not surf from google as you've probably been hijacked) and find their forums. I think the one at cnet is called "computer help." Tell them what your problem is and ask if anyone can help you or direct you to a place where you can get help. You may know this already but I'll say it anyway: ASK NICELY. Do not type in all caps something like "HELP ME PLZ!!!!!1!!!" You will be ignored if you do this. Someone may come along and help you directly, or they may direct you to a forum where you can get help more quickly. Someone will probably tell you to download HijackThis! or Malwarebytes. You should get a link from the forums, rather than going through your probably-hijacked browser.

Or, if you have all your startup disks you can just go in and get any personal files off your hard drive and then do a reformat and rebuild.

Good luck. I haven't been phished but I've been hijacked before and it's no fun.

Alright, thanks everyone!!

I was told by a computer guy at my school that the best bet would be to buy <<Webroot Anti-Virus 2011 with Spy Sweeper>>. Its one of the only Anti-Virus that comes with a Spy Sweeper (which would eliminate the threats). And, I need an Anti-Virus anyways.

Safe bet?

Its on sale at Future Shop for 25$ (3 PCs for 1 year.)

I used to use SpySweeper. It did the job, but I never had anything as big as what you have going. The problem with Windows 7 is that most computers don't include a set of recovery discs. I had to pay an extra $35 when I got my laptop so that I would get discs in the event that I ever had to reformat. I'm guessing Bern didn't do that. They want like $80 to get them straight from Microsoft and it isn't built in anymore.

You could try SpySweeper, but I don't think it will get everything. It's your best bet for the price. Virus scanning software may not do it and will cost more to figure out.

I don't know if it will definitely get it all, but I've used Spybot Search & Destroy. It's a little more advanced though. You can post your log to some message boards and some of the tech guys on those forums will tell you what to get rid of.

Yeah, I used a combo of Spybot and HijackThis to fix my problem. Had to post multiple logs to message boards, so it took a few days, but it fixed things right up.

I'm pretty sure you're best bet would be to go to the link Seb provided, if you want to remove all that crap. THEN go and buy some Anti Virus program. I've always used McAfee.

I'm an IT engineer ;)

I use free antivirus Avira AntiVir: http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

And watch what you click on (on msn, weird emails, weird facebook msg, don't download crazy shit (porn)) and you'll be fine.

The formatting solution isn't a bad idea either.

I've actually heard Avira is a really good free one. One of the one's that aren't a joke or actually infects you.

I use Windows Live oneCare on my PC at home, and obviously nothing for my mac.

I use to have Panda AntiVirus or whatever it's called, Panda something. It was decent, but then it gave me a virus after I didn't re-new it, so I re-formatted. I've also used the one that starts with a T...Trend Micro or something? It was OK.

Norton use to be complete crap, but in the last couple years it's ratings have gone up but I won't use them anymore after getting so many viruses in the past.

Best one I've used is Windows Live OneCare to be honest. Haven't had a single virus or anything in 3 years now. *knock on wood*

avast! Antivirus is pretty good and it's free, even though it may not sound too legit.

You can download Windows ISOs remarkably easily, and if you have a legal copy you should be able to find the license information on your computer if Windows came pre-installed.

For those who are curious to know what happened since I got you all into it, I ended up getting my laptop completely restored, which cost me 100$. The anti-virus that I bought couldn't remove the virus cause it was just too big and I didn't have the motivation to learn how to reformat everything.

So boys.. Lesson of the day: ALWAYS HAVE AN ANTI-VIRUS!

Not sure an Anti-Virus would have been a big help since you downloaded the program yourself. But, glad to hear things are working again and you learned a lesson. Computers can be a pain in the ass.
