Goalies
As I'm sure you're all aware, goalies are kind of boring in EHM. They get a pot & con value, develop to them and then... that's it. They can't even pot boost like skaters. This is stark contrast to Real Life, where goalies seem to be the least predictable prospects.
Anyway, if you have any ideas to make goalies more interesting, feel free to post here. We can do something simple like random pot/con gains. What I'd really like is for the ceilings to actually mean something. I'm not sure if it's practical to enforce that, though. Once goalies get old enough they don't develop anymore (like Nabokov) but up to age 25 they seem to revert to their pot rating in every category.
Thoughts?

Re: Goalies
The biggest problem that comes to my mind is that how come all the goalies have the same attribute for glove, pads, blocking, rebound control etc. ? Should not they have f.e. 80 glove hand, 75 rebound, 82 pads or 78 glove hand, 81 rebounds and 79 pads etc etc?? Some goalies have better gloves, some are better at rebound control, pads work etc. My idea.

Re: Goalies
I personally don't care about the built. My problem with goalies is they all basically suck.
We've had private discussions about this and my idea stays the same. I'd like to boost every goalie's CON or/and attributes by X for next year. Getting better goaltending throughout the league will also help lower the scoring output to stay relatively close to what it is in today's NHL.
After year one, if our results are still not how we'd like them, then we could add another X until we have numbers that make sense and goalies that are actually relevant.
I don't care, if we need 90oa goalies to make the game work, I'm ready to do it.

I would support Julien's thought, too.
Absolutely makes sense.

Re: Goalies
I'm against anything that involves a league wide boost. That is effectively punishing anyone who took the time to acquire a goalie above an 80 CON, knowing the importance of the attribute.
Leave things the way they are, imo.

Re: Goalies
It's not punishing anyone since we'd do it proportionally. It's the easiest way to make the scoring/goalies' stats more realistic without touching in-game sliders. We also have a lot more talent up front than in net since the past draft class have been so string.
I have an 85CON goalie who sucked just like any other guy would have, because goalies are worthless as they are now.
I don't think anyone should fear of losing an edge over this. If you worked towards getting a good goalie then I suppose you'd be happy if he actually was "good". I'm tired of the 6.7 rated goalies with horrible stats winning the Vezina.

Re: Goalies
A guy going from a 75 CON to 80, makes a much bigger difference than a guy going from 85 to 90. The boost might be equal, but some will become more equal than others.
You said your willing to make every goalie in the file '90 OA to achieve a fair level of scoring'. Imagine how NYI feels with having MAF? How would salaries work? Your sacrificing so much for such little gain.
NHL total goals this year: 6803
EHEC total goals this year: 8185
So, we need to cut about 1000 goals for next year if you are dead set on this stuff.
1000 is 12% of 8185, so adjust the scoring slider down about 10% (20 points since the scale is on 200).
Don't start with editing the file or making 90 OA zombie goalies, that is so lame. Should be last resort.

Re: Goalies
Well, we can certainly adjust the sliders too. I didn't even realize that scoring was at 150. That seems way too high.
I'd like to have more powerplays than in the current NHL, though. NHL powerplays/game have been dropping steadily since 2006 mainly due to interference and stickwork not getting called, which isn't a trend I want to duplicate. I think we're already comfortably above current NHL minor penalty rates but that's also part of the reason why goalie save percentages are so abysmal so maybe it could use a tweak too.

Re: Goalies
Is trying to match real life NHL that important? To me not at all. I don't like the idea of tweaking EHM in any form. So little potential benefits, I'd leave it as it is.

Re: Goalies
Every change we make is tweaking EHM...
Anyway, I opened up the oldest file I have left (2010 preseason) and the penalty slider was 120 then (125 now) while the injury slider was 110 (100 now), so we've changed them before.

Re: Goalies
We have adjusted different sliders every now and then; GM's complained after the first couple seasons that certain teams were 'trapping too much' and there wasn't enough scoring.
The game default settings for every category is 120 out of a possible 200. Currently we are:
Scoring: 150
Penalties: 125
Fighting: 110
Injury: 100
So, I think the solution is quite clear. Moving forward, I'd say we should tie the scoring setting against NHL results. For every 500 goal differential between NHL/EHEC each off-season, we adjust the setting 5 points +/-. Like a central bank adjusting interest rates to control inflation, or something like that.
I don't know too much, but changing the settings is much better than editing the file. Very authoritarian; 'I don't like goalies, make them obsolete'.
IMO, goalies are simple. They can be reduced to: EN>LE>CON>OA.

I always thought that touching the game sliders was the last resort.
Now if we can... problem solved!

Re: Goalies
That's the main issue, yes. The problem is I have no idea how to implement that because goalies ignore ceilings. Once they reach a certain age they ignore potential as well (just like skaters) until they start declining at 37-38.Dallas Stars GM wrote:The biggest problem that comes to my mind is that how come all the goalies have the same attribute for glove, pads, blocking, rebound control etc. ? Re: Goalies
Leave everything as is.
Lower the scoring slider a bit.
See the results after the season.
Repeat if necessary.

Re: Goalies
I would like to see goalies more important for the salary they command.
