Update, etc

Post by Commish Bub(NYR) »

A few things as we wrap up arbitrations and head into the next phase of our long and winding summer...

1. Please check your players over the next few days to make sure you've accepted/rejected any TO/PO. Anyone not covered in the forums will be released once we begin free agency.

2. We should be in touch with or just about completing arbitrations this week. Once done, we'll make an announcement and give everyone at least a couple days before free agency starts.

3. We have a new GM joining us today. Look in the team news forum for a welcoming announcement.

4. You've probably noticed that Adam hasn't been around lately. He's taken an extended leave of absence this summer but will be back for the season. Don't worry...he'll be back. :)

5. The more observant of you will have noticed that there have been some player additions to the file. We've added a number of 2014 college free agents to the file (list below). They will be subject to the regular free agency rules, ie, contracts will NOT be considered ELCs, but standard player contracts. The players are:
Christian Folin, Colin Campbell, Greg Carey, Matt Carey, Ryan Haggerty, Chris McCarthy, Kenney Morrison, Bryce Van Brabant, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Mat Bodie.

Once arbitrations are done, I will enter all new contracts into the file and upload it to the site. Check your team to make sure we did not miss any contracts, etc. We will be advancing the game to just after the EHM rollover right before we begin EHEC free agency. ANY PLAYERS NOT SIGNED BY THE ROLLOVER WILL BE RELEASED TO FREE AGENCY.

I'm assuming the Co-GMs in Chicago have already disappeared on us? What a surprise, I knew this would happen the moment they were introduced.

We're wrapping up the final arbitrations, taking care of the orphaned teams, and preparing for move into free agency. I'm not sure what day that will be, but bear with us and the slowness of the summer...we will be moving forward soon.

Also: sometime between August 8 and yesterday, the player.ehm file (I believe) was majorly corrupted. Yesterday, using the file I downloaded from our ftp site, I got runtime errors whenever I tried to a) switch to NYI GM; b) complete a player search in the Players/Staff tab; c) advance the game a day. I was able to revert to the 8/8/14 file, and everything appears to be fine again. However, this means that anything you have done in GM Office will no longer be in the file. I suspect something done in GM Office is the culprit, but haven't been able to pin it down yet.

Is there a copy if the corrupted file anywhere? It's worth trying to figure out what happened. Chris, do you remember doing anything in particular in the GM office? It might have been training or something.

I have a copy of the corrupted file and can send it to you if you like. I think there was a problem similar to this right after GM Office was started, and Quinn figured out it was a training issue, iirc.

UPDATE: used a file compare tool. The problem was entirely due to...Sean Avery. [insert joke here] His position had been changed to '17', which is the same team number as the Islanders in the file. Just a cut-and-paste issue, it seems.

It's possible. Given that he's been with NYI for a couple of seasons now, I'm not sure when that issue may have arisen.

Actually looking back, his alternate position was changed to 17 at some point in the 12-13 season. Then I guess Chris wanted to see what switching his position would do... so it's not really a bug in the GM office at any rate.

I've spent an otherwise delightful afternoon entering contracts and other things into the file. I advanced one day, just to make sure things were working. If you did anything in GM Office this afternoon, do it again (sorry). Please take some time to make sure your contracts have been entered correctly, and that no one has been missed. There is still time to make more offers if you need to, but not much time... Also, team and player options have not yet been entered. They will be done when we hit the rollover date.

If you have any questions/issues, use your team's contract offers thread to post them. Not here.

The file is below, if you prefer looking at the game rather than GM O.

Another update, another file advance.

I've moved the game forward to 6/26, which means all the player/team options have been entered. We're now looking at using the weekend to give everyone one final chance to look at your teams, make sure contracts have been entered, trades completed, etc, before we begin free agency. (There are still a couple of things pending with a team or two; they know who they are.) Right now we are looking at beginning free agency at NOON EASTERN TIME US on Tuesday, August 26th. We'll post appropriate reminders before then and let everyone know how the system will work. If you're around on the forums, you won't miss it, trust me.

Getting excited for this season boys!

Also, I have to say the three keeper UFA rule was a really good idea. It doesn't really compromise teams ability to keep their core, but also makes free agency a bit more eventful.

We're probably scrapping that next year (for realism purposes, and arbitration is a pain in the ass), so there's a bit of warning for building your teams.

So anyone over 27 cannot be resigned and will enter free agency?

Likely, yes. Possibly some sort of "retainment premium" where instead the hometown team is given the option to sign the player for 100% + X% of what the highest bidder offered.

Interesting, it be nice to be able to keep a player or two but whatever the league thinks is best.

FREE AGENT FRENZY IS ABOUT TO BEGIN

That's right, after years of waiting, the annual EHEC free-for-all is about to begin. The latest file has been posted below, and everything should be properly updated. Apologies if we've screwed anything up, but let us know and we'll fix it.

Said frenzy will begin at noon eastern time tomorrow, Tuesday, August 26. We will use the existing free agency thread in the forums (under "Free Agency," duh). Tomorrow morning we'll update the rules listed in the stickied post on that thread. The two basic things to remember first are a) send offers by PM to the Free Agents account, and 2) send a PM for each different player. Any additional offers to players listed after the first one will be ignored. Again, we'll update the rest of the rules tomorrow morning.

Free agency begins in less than 30 minutes. I've advanced the file past the rollover date. If someone from your team was released mistakenly, let me know. Also, new retirees have been generated in the game; if you have a player slated to retire but who is 38 or younger, let us know so we can unretire him. Otherwise, he'll probably begin to vopatize.

As you open up your checkbooks, bear in mind that you will be limited to 50 total contracts once the season begins. Also, the cap is at 64 million. Post PMs to the Free Agents account, not to me or Tim, and one PM per player.

33% for players unsigned during the 13-14 season.

Also, Greg Carey has the wrong age in the file. He should be listed as 1990 instead of 1986.

Players without a contract for over a year can now be signed at 33% of what their previous salary was I think.

4 bids maximum.

You can bid on players you let go.

Note how many existing contracts you have within your organization (50 maximum).

Any player over 25 is waiver eligible.

$64M cap.

Highest AAV wins; tiebracker is total money offered.

What's going to happen with Montreal's RFAs?

For RFA bidding, are we following NHL rules, whereby you must own your own pick for that year to make any bid with potential compensation involved? The rulebook doesn't really specify.

Also, is there a deadline to sign your own RFAs so they can play that season? I believe it's January 1st in the NHL.

We've never really discussed either of these points. So...

1. seems to me that if you own at least one pick for the particular round that you should be able to make a bid.

2. Jan. 1st works for me.

After downloading and installing the player file from the league ftp site, I'm getting a runtime error ("runtime error 62. Input past end of file.") when I try using Player Scout. I've run a file compare tool using the most recent player file from my computer against the downloaded one, but see nothing amiss. Anyone familiar with this error?

(Fyi, the game itself does not appear to be affected.)

So it looks like the issue might be with setting training through GM Office. I can't find any other issues with the players file that it could be. So for now, until Quinn gets back....if you want to change the training for any of your players, send a pm to me and I'll do it manually. This includes any changes made over the preceding 24-48 hours. This will suck, but I think it may be the way to go, unless someone figures out what the issue is/was.

... but from the coming draft year, right? Not 5 years from now. Who picks which one if the team has multiple picks available?

Waivers were discussed already, but I think it's worth keeping TW tags on crappy players just to keep in-game finances in check. Otherwise, in-game team budgets may need to be reset to a higher (fixed) number to compensate for the extra salaries in the AHL. I would appreciate this being done anyways because it'll save me the effort of doing it every time I fastsim

Also regarding waivers, is anybody over 25 is waiver-eligible regardless of salary? Just wondering if every scrub I signed has to go through waivers - the scrubs I already have on my AHL team are safe until I recall them. I envision irritating other GMs by never letting any age 25+ scrubs pass through waivers while their AHL team doesn't have enough skaters to play games.
