I think the time limit is way too long. I'd be in favor of a four-hour maximum, but the clock stops from say 10pm to 8am, that way anyone who wants to draft live rather than send a list doesn't have to worry about getting screwed because their timer runs out at 3:30am or something.

Yeah, it is long, not sure I really see any other way to do it, though. Now that everybody has smartphones, it's helpful.Parker wrote:I think the time limit is way too long. Somebody needs to make an EHM app.

Well, it's something that we can discuss during the CBA talks over the summer, probably in late July/early August.CapsGM wrote:This.Parker wrote:I think the time limit is way too long. I mean, you have to consider, too, that I don't want too long of a break between FA and the start of training camp. I have a hard enough time getting some guys back on board with about a month off. If it was another 2-3 weeks, it'd be that much more difficult.
I know it completely sucks sitting here waiting on picks. Believe me, I've had the next pick for 7 hours now.
I just fail to see an easy way to do this because no solution will please everybody.

Re: Inane Draft Chatter
Just a quick note, I was going off a list that Sean sent me 17 hours ago. With Ryan on the clock, I wanted to make sure that the pick was up....
Sean, if you're up before Ryan makes his pick (~5:30-6:30 EST since he's on Newfoundland time, an hour and a half ahead of EST), you can change your pick if you want to. Just make a new post in the thread. I wasn't sure if things had changed or not, but I wanted to give Ryan the opportunity to pick before he had to go to work and wind up holding things up if he couldn't access the site. If he even gets to his pick in the morning.
If Ryan has already posted his pick and you determine that you wanted somebody else since your list was relatively dated and a lot of picks have been made, just shoot me a PM and we'll see how things work out. I figured you'd be cool with it since Dumba was second on your list.

DAL PMed me and asked for his pick to be changed as his list was out of date and he decided on a different player. I texted Ryan and asked if he would have taken Dumba if he was there and he said no. So, no harm, no foul. Dumba will be available, and I will update DAL's post with his pick.

Sent Zaq a Facebook message which apparently goes to his phone. When that pick comes in, we'll be done with the first round and ahead of last year's pace by a couple hours. Hopefully. Last year's first round ended at 5:37 pm ET on Monday.
Of course, the second round took until 7:30 pm ET on Friday. I hope to be a little quicker than that pace.

again, i don't know the player, but i do know the two teams: the Islanders and the Blue Jackets are the two leading front offices from Clown University. i don't know what is worse: the clownish offer, or the rejection of the clownish offer. i have nothing more to add, reallyHow highly did the Blue Jackets value defenseman Ryan Murray before taking him with the No. 2 overall pick in Friday's first round of the NHL Draft? Enough to turn down an eye-opening offer from the New York Islanders, who, according to numerous NHL sources, offered all of their picks -- one in each round -- for the right to move up from No. 4 to No. 2 for Murray.

Re: Inane Draft Chatter
I'll give you the first but, considering that he inherited a terrible team, is working under a brutal budget, has an owner that meddles like a motherfucker and plays in a crumbling arena, I'm quite happy to give Snow the benefit of the doubt. He's made missteps - keeping Nino Neiderreiter on the roster this year unnecessarily - but those have, I think, been balanced out by a pretty decent rebuilding job.Commissioner (CBJ) wrote:Embarrassing all around. They still don't have a defenseman worth a fuck on the roster. I guess you could make a case for Streit, but he was there before Snow. They still don't have a goaltender-in-waiting.DallasSean wrote:I'll give you the first but, considering that he inherited a terrible team, is working under a brutal budget, has an owner that meddles like a motherfucker and plays in a crumbling arena, I'm quite happy to give Snow the benefit of the doubt. Yeah, Wang's a cheap ass. And yeah, they need a new arena. But, in terms of personnel, I really don't see where Snow has done a whole lot to help things. His drafting has been suspect, given that his team has given up over 250 goals every season since 07-08. That's not a ringing endorsement for a GM.

Re: Inane Draft Chatter
Tell you what, I know some GMs bitched about the draft class and its strength or lack thereof, but I think this has been one of my best draft classes to date. I know a lot of guys have told me that they feel like they've unprepared or are having to scout really deep to find a player. There are a lot of similar players, separated only by a couple strengths. That makes me happy. It shouldn't be easy like the 2010 draft was.
You've had to work to find players. I'm pleased with that. I'm also happy with the higher number of guys with attributes in the 10s and 20s. Far more realistic path to the NHL. Definitely happy with what I accomplished this year.
There are, I think, fewer diamonds in the rough in the middle rounds this year than last, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's not like 4th and 5th rounders are having a NHL impact a year or two after being drafted.

sounds good in theory, but it won't work. the problem isn't guys waiting until the end of their 12 hour clock to decide/trade/sleep/whatever; the problem is the long waits are usually followed by auto-pick because the guy is nowhere to be seen.DallasSean wrote:So, for next year, maybe we trim all the times down? 8 hours for the first round, 6 for the second, four for the third and so on
Re: Inane Draft Chatter
Alright, trim the times down then stipulate anybody who forces an auto-pick gets a player picked completely at random from the rest of the pool or somebody from the bottom of the rankings. If that guy's submitted a list but it's out of date because a lot of picks have passed, then maybe you give him leniency and pick somebody capable, but if there's a risk with your third-overall pick you get somebody not even fit to hold Jason Bonsignore's jock then I can guarantee everybody's sending a list a hundred strong.

Re: Inane Draft Chatter
The problem has very little to do with teams not being around. The problem has to do with so many picks being traded when they're on the clock and then having to wait for confirmation, negotiations, trade approval, etc. I have enough ways of getting in touch with guys to let them know that they're on the clock.DallasSean wrote:Alright, trim the times down then stipulate anybody who forces an auto-pick gets a player picked completely at random from the rest of the pool or somebody from the bottom of the rankings. Everybody and their brother has asked about a second round pick in this draft. That's what slows the process down. First rounders are harder to move. Second rounders get passed around like bongs in frat houses.
Just the nature of the beast. Either you deal with it, or you don't. Shorter time limits probably aren't fixing the problem.

Re: Inane Draft Chatter
I think shorter time limits actually might help fix this. It puts GMs under more pressure to get a deal done because the seller can't drag the process out quite so long and the longer the buyer takes, the less time he has to make the pick when it goes through (and in doing so, improves the chances they send a one-player list saying "if I get this pick traded to me I'm taking this player"). It's nowhere near perfect, but it's a start.Commissioner (CBJ) wrote:Everybody and their brother has asked about a second round pick in this draft. That's what slows the process down. Agree. It's frustrating yes, but at the same time we all have lives outside of EHEC and sometimes have to deal with an actual unexpected obligation that has come up. I see absolutely no problems with the way the draft is held. Just like Tim, I don't see any reasons why you'd want it to end quicker. We're starting the 3rd round as of now and this is perfectly fine.
Also, it adds to the forum activity which is at an all time high IMO. What's not to like, seriously?

Among other things, like somebody said on twitter you've got Mark Giordano taking a hometown discount and signing for $4m because he knew the Flames were in a crappy cap situation. How pissed off is he that an inferior player got a seriously superior deal?
