2021 EHEC Draft Lottery

Post by SharksGM »

The 2021 EHEC Draft Lottery will be held on Saturday, May 15th at 7:00 PM EST. The nominal draft order is as follows:

1) COL
2) DET
3) LA via BOS (-71 GF-GA)
4) VAN (-33 GF-GA)
5) TOR
6) NJD (29 W)
7) WSH (31 W, 4 OTL)
8) CGY (31 W, 3 OTL)
9) CBJ
10) ANA
11) NYI (32 W)
12) MIN (34 W)
13) WPG
14) OTT via BUF

15) NSH (36 W)
16) STL (37 W)
17) ANA via PHI
18) CAR
19) FLA
20) ARZ
21) TB (43 W)
22) OTT via PIT (44 W)
23) SJ (2 OTL)
24) TOR via LA (5 OTL)
25) OTT via EDM
26) COL via OTT

27-30) DAL, MIN via NYR, MTL, ANA via CHI

This translates into the following odds of winning one of the top 3 picks:

COL 20% (TOR)
DET 13.5% (EDM)
LA via BOS 11.5% (VAN)
VAN 9.5% (CBJ)
TOR 8.5% (CGY)
NJD 7.5% (WPG)
WSH 6.5% (ARZ)
CGY 6% (BUF)
CBJ 5% (MTL)
ANA 3.5% (COL)
NYI 3% (NJD)
MIN 2.5% (OTT)
WPG 2% (CAR)
OTT via BUF 1% (BOS)

Please double-check your pick ownership / standings place before the lottery.

How the draw works: There will be (at least) 3 draws of 4 unique random numbers between 1 and 14 to determine the top three selections. The winning combination is taken from the 2016 NHL draft lottery odds table:

http://ehec.pro/NHL-Lottery-2016-Look-U ... erical.pdf (it looks like the NHL deleted their own hosted versions of this file; this is a copy I had saved before. whatevs)

The numbers will be chosen from the following linked draws. Please copy the links for your own records, as this is super serious.

I forget, do we follow the NHL's format on the order of teams eliminated from playoffs? Because in that case my pick from Ottawa would be in the 15-22 range.

Yes we do:

“ The basic order of the picks is determined as follows:[9]

1)The teams that did not qualify for the playoffs the previous season (picks 1–14)

2)The teams that made the playoffs in the previous season but did not win either their division in the regular season or play in the Conference Finals (picks 15-22)

3)The teams that won their divisions in the previous season but did not play in the Conference Finals (potentially picks 23-26)”

Oh no I might be wrong, otherwise TB would pick 24 (as a division winner)

I think in previous years we ordered picks 15-26 by regular season point totals, rather than playoff seeding, which might have been different from the NHL while we followed the four division format. But now that we have six division winners and don't seed them any differently, the standings order and playoff seeding are the same, so it's a moot point.

e: also Ottawa won their division and the whole league anyway, there's no system where they'd pick anywhere but 26th.

Does the NHL not put the first round losers between 15-22 in opposite order of standings? Then the second round losers from 23-26? They used to, anyway, when they originally changed from doing 1-30 in reverse standings order.

They've always used the division leaders thing and the first+second round losers are combined. In 2016, for example, all four division leaders lost in the first or second round and then picked 23-26, while Nashville lost in the second round but picked 17th.

I would guess the day after the Cup is awarded.

Trades cannot be entered in-game until June 10. The idea currently is that while we want to support non-playoff teams having fun and negotiating, we don't want to count out playoff teams and why not let teams let offers simmer and maybe even upgrade. Plus letting trades now will not show up on the website, which adds further confusion. So I think the plan is to wait a bit at the moment. I'm sure it'll open up well in advance of the actual draft.

Drumroll please... our winners are:

3 7 10 13 EDM = Detroit Red Wings pick #1 overall
6 11 12 14 VAN = Los Angeles Kings pick #2 overall
3 6 7 12 EDM = Detroit wins again because apparently lotteries are their thing.
2 6 7 11 ARI = Washington Capitals pick #3 overall

Tragedy strikes our last place team (Colorado) yet again as they fall to #4, and the Pacific Division continues its tradition of jumping spots with traded picks whenever possible. If it makes anyone feel better, there's no consensus #1 or #2 this year anyway. The final top 10 is thus:

1. DET
2. LA via BOS
3. WSH
4. COL
5. VAN
6. TOR
7. NJ
8. CGY
9. CBJ
10. ANA

Congrats to DET and sorry to COL, but just like the real Redwings, picking 4th nets you a strong prospect

Well, I knew for a fact I was dropping to 4 as that happens almost every year in the NHL since they went to this crazy lottery setup. Almost every year the top player goes to a much better team than the one that finished last. Glad they are finally tweaking it.

I don't entirely disagree, I think the switch to just two lottery spots is probably a good one - but at least in this case the top player isn't going to a much better team? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Essentially it's 2nd worst, 4th worst (but traded), and 7th worst, so could be, uh, worse? 🙃

That's true, but doesn't make any difference to my draft position haha.

Draft lottery doesn't affect the order of picks in rounds 2-5 right?

From the rulebook:

Draft lottery results only apply to the first round. All subsequent rounds will follow the final standings, including the playoffs.
