Updates: Draft Class, Olympics, etc.

Post by Virtual Jarmo »

Gents, with my fiancee out of town visiting family from Thursday to next Tuesday, I will have plenty of time to put in the 2010 draft class. I hope to have this done between Friday and Tuesday. I will be attempting to compile information from numerous sources including Hockey's Future, stats, mock drafts, scouting reports, etc. If you guys can link me to some of this information, it would be much appreciated. You can just post it in this thread. I will also be re-evaluating some of the draftees already in the file.

I plan on adding two additional rounds to the draft and go with 7 like the NHL does. I will update these two rounds manually. I will replace the EHM-generated draftees to fill as many slots as I can and then start deleting the game's worst OA players who are not with a team to fill out the rest if need be. I also realize that I will need to replace retiring players at some point as well. Therefore, some additional draftees may be added at season's end. I will send the updated career.car, players.ehm, and statistics.ehm to Ryan on his sim nights so that you guys have an updated file and so that it will stay consistent with attribute changes to current players. The updated file will be included in the uploaded one nightly.

It is a huge undertaking and I appreciate your patience if the sim is late for whatever reason or something else occurs. Again, I will be very grateful to anybody who can help me out with the acquiring/compiling of information. Note that the WJC will be going on in the EHEC file during this update. Some players may change names. Just a heads up so that you guys don't think that the file is going haywire.

In terms of the Olympics, there are two options in my mind. The first is that the league-controls the Olympic sim and posts nightly results. This is my least-favorite option. I fear that it will further decrease activity and make getting back into the EHEC schedule very difficult, with several inactive GMs. My other idea is to put together a volunteer list of GMs who want to control an Olympic team. It would be done completely at random by pulling names out of a hat. All of the current rosters/countries will be put in a separate savefile with the Olympic schedule. Assuming that we get more interest than there are countries, I will prepare a second, or in some cases third, team with several countries. Likely, these countries will be US, CAN, RUS, and perhaps SWE. In these instances, the Committee will construct the team. At that point, we will re-arrange the schedule and create our own round robin brackets.

As I said, the Olympics have to be generated in a separate save file. For this reason, injuries and attribute changes will NOT carry over to the EHEC file. Only leadership (LE) changes will be entered in to the league file and will be entered on a 2x basis. So if a player gains 3 LE during the tournament, he will increase by 6 LE in the EHEC file. Odds are, the changes will be very minute, but it is important to simulate the increase in experience and leadership as best we can.

I am open to any other suggestions on how to operate the Olympics.

A couple other items of note. Guys, I really want some more participation in discussion on the boards. Make a bullshit thread in the off-topic forum. Maybe a thread for some Youtube videos of sick highlights, or other random shit. Discuss recently released movies or some interesting articles you found. Anything. I know it's hard to get a lot of discussion going as we all are busy, but give it the old college try. Talk shit after games. Anything.

Also during my time away from the ball and chain, I will be trying my hand at creating some team pages for everybody so that the EHM News tab for each team and the league as a whole can be posted. We'll see how it goes. I will likely try to edit the main page to get a Player of the Month, GM of the Month, and Player of the Week blurb in there. Sorry it's taken so long. Since our webmaster bailed on us, and I haven't had the time or patience to dick around with HTML, I feel like it's way overdue. If anybody can help me figure out why the calendar page doesn't work properly, I'd really appreciate some help. When you click on a specific score, it doesn't go to that box score, just the first game of that month.

Keep up the activity, guys. A million times thank you to the guys who check in every day or every other day. The rest of you, try to stop by more frequently.

Also, get your friends involved. We have a handful of open teams and have not received any applications in quite some time. I really want to get all the teams filled again.

Thanks, and Happy New Year to all.

Nice post and ideas champ. Again, appreciate all the work you and Ryan are putting in and I'd for sure participate in the Olympics! Tell me which day you plan on doing the draft edits and I'll be there to help out.

As for the activity on the boards, I'm fine with how it is. Lots of talks on the boxscores and rivalries will only build up.

I'm using Google Chrome and it doesn't work for me either.

Makes sense that EHM's export process would only be compatible with IE. Hell, you can probably access it properly with shit like Netscape's browser.

Matt, I'll be doing them sporadically from Friday-Tuesday. Odds are I'll either be doing them late at night or during the early afternoon.

What I really need help with is compiling all the information. Birthdate, shoots R/L, Ht/Wt, stuff like that. Then I need scouting reports. I think I'm going to put together ceilings myself rather than let EHM do it. Their ceilings are way too messed up. My only issue with it is that it gives me a ton of control and I don't want that in this case.

What do you guys think? Should I put the ceilings together myself based off scouting reports and their amateur scoring totals or should I let 1.15b do them? (the file was created with 1.15b)

I think you should deal with the ceilings yourself because sometimes they are REALLY messed up.

Here's some interesting websites, yall probably know but eh:

http://eliteprospects.com/ - nice for stats, age, shoots, height, weight, position etc...

http://www.hockeysfuture.com - sometimes you can find scouting reports

http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/1 ... _december/ - latest article

http://www.hockeyprospect.com/ - this one is not my favorite at all

Well, HF's rating system is sort of like pot/con, since the number is supposed to be the player's ceiling and the letter grade their likelihood of reaching it (so potential basically). I don't see any problem with editing the EHM ceilings which are typically crazy.

www.redlinereport.com is another source for prospects, while www.russianprospects.com is pretty much as the url describes it, although the main page doesn't look to have been updated in forever. I found some fairly recent info on google though: http://www.russianprospects.com/public/ ... nchor=News so I don't think the site is completely dead.

Just curious, why the love of Russian players when you're of Asian descent? Not implying anything by that, I've just always wondered.

Well, Russia's closest to Asia, geographically and (formerly) politically. ;)

In all seriousness, it only started in this league when I took over the Capitals. They had a lot of Russian players to start with already (AO, Semin, Varlamov, and previously Fedorov/Kozlov). After I grabbed Zherdev from UFA (and Fedorov/Kozlov too), pretty much 1/3 of my roster was from Russia anyways.

Calling teams isn't fair, even though I'd take the West.:D

We could split the weaker teams but then that just limits their chances at it. But if not, we could do teams like West Germany and East Germany. Weaker teams can take pride in finishing top ten or holding Canada West to only 5 goals. haha

Well just to take some guys away from Team Russia - Team Ukraine - Khabby - Ponakarovski - Miknov... i'd have to look thought the NHL rosters to see who else. not that Ponakarovski would get me a Gold Medal. lol

If there is anything you want me to help with regarding the draft - i'd be glad to help out. After the Christmas business now done - i'm workin my way back online more. I'd also be willing to put up a mini poster in the staff area at work (Rexall Place) to advertise the league a bit.

I started doing some of the draft class, but what I did was copy/paste the EHM-generated draftees into a separate file and then began overwriting them in the independent notepad file. I didn't want to have this process ongoing through the regular season and potentially screw up the savefile. The standings issue put a minor scare into me about the file and making updates.

I'll probably get 50-60% of the way done and then let loose that independent file and let you guys start to critique it a little bit.

I kept telling people during the WJC that Fowler would be in consideration for the Olympic Team USA now. I was really really impressed with the kid. Needless to say, my file will reflect that.

I'd like to see how Fowler does on a team that isn't stacked, and he needs to add some weight as well. But I guess we will see in the future. I honestly believe the best player coming out of that draft is Connolly, too bad he won't be playing in the prospectsg game. He doesn't get enough exposure.

Not yet finished, I'd say 20% done. The real problem that I've been running in to is with players in European leagues. Their stat totals are much different from the CHL leagues and it's giving me a hard time with rating them. I've been doing plenty of research, though.

Also, I'm going to be taking a back seat on that within a week here so I can organize the Olympics. That's a crucial period for us because I'm fearful of what inactivity would do. We just filled DAL, STL, and FLA, so we're finally getting back to almost full.
