Vancouver - Florida

Post by VancouverCanucksGM »

To Vancouver
Michael Frolik
Jacob Markstrom

To Florida
David Setoguchi
Dustin Tokarski
PIT 1st Rd PK 2015
VAN 2nd Rd PK 2015

I'm going to have to do some buying out of my own to make this work.

So, contingent on this being accepted, I will waive/buyout Scott Gomez, Shane O'Brien, and Adam McQuaid.

The picks will compensate him for losing better players, me moving 2 lesser players will compensate me for giving him salary cap relief.

I get 2 more pieces for the future and he gets 2 roster players that aren't terrible downgrades, as well as 2 picks to help the future once he's out of cap hell, and finally, if my math is right, he saves $3,450,000 if my math is correct.

Alright, here's my thinking - I need to shed salary, and in no uncertain terms. Markstrom's needed to go basically since I signed him. I'd have preferred to just straight swap Markstrom for Tokarski, but where's anyone's incentive to do that? I don't expect anyone to do me any favours with second tier guys like Kariya/Ribeiro/Whatever shitty defensemen I have making 4mil +, so somebody out there gets Frolik/Granlund on a sweet deal for being a good samaritan, the Panthers go back to being bottom feeders and the circle of life continues.

This isn't going to be a decision that most of you are going to agree with, but this trade is approved. Frankly, we're not particularly happy with it either, but there's no good outcome in this situation. Zaq has made very little attempt to make a trade that actually benefits his team along with cutting salary. That's a major consideration in this deal. The more this salary cap situation drags on, the less engaged Zaq seems to be about his team. It's a frustrating situation to be in and creative solutions are hard to come by. That part of our rationale isn't meant to belittle Zaq, but it's just the facts of this particular situation.

The hope is that Pittsburgh's first and Vancouver's second in 2015 net some help for Florida because Tokarski and Setoguchi are very limited players. We have no doubt that a better deal would be out there for Frolik, but this is unfortunately what has been presented to us. It's even more frustrating that the picks won't have any relevance for quite some time. This deal really put us in a bad spot because there is no good outcome. Either one team benefits by taking advantage of a bad situation or we're back in the same dilemma we've been stuck in.

In retrospect, I should have done the transactions I did with Florida and then accepted Pat's deal for Granlund because at least Osnovin and Brodin were young players that fit into the Florida framework. Setoguchi and Tokarski are fly-by-night fillers for that lineup with poor consistency and very clearly downgrade the Panthers lineup. We know that there was no negotiation in this deal and there was no negotiation in the previous NYR deal that was never ruled on because we privately asked both parties to negotiate a fairer deal. Unfortunately, we never got another response and I deleted the thread at Pat's request.

Again, we hope that the picks will become something of value for Florida. But this situation needed a resolution. It's not the one that we had in mind, but hopefully we can move forward.
