I wanted Mihalik off the books for a while now and this is my way out. Bereglazov who was acquired from SJ a week ago will line up in Mihalik's spot and now Robidas will most likely steal Exelby's job. That bottom pairing now has a cap hit that I no longer have a problem with. I paid a lot to get rid of this bad contract but I think that in order to continue to be successful, my team can't carry this kind of player any longer.

I acquire a couple more pieces to work with, even though I take back a little more salary, my defense gets younger, and I wasn't going to keep Robidas past.this season. I hopefully have another deal in place to get some cap relief. Mihalik will be a solid defenseman for me, and as mentioned, hopefully Darcy boosts.

Julien was having a hard time trading Mihalik, despite his usefulness. Sweetening the deal frees up cap space for Calgary, and gives Vancouver a couple of assets to fill out his roster and prospects.
