Calgary/Boston
To CGY: David Krejci(72), René Bourque(64), WPG's 2nd round pick 2012
To BOS: Brad Richards(70), Tim Erixon(80), Curtis Glencross(78), CBS' 2nd round pick 2012 and CGY's 1st round pick 2013
After getting Alex Tanguay I felt like that was just not going to be enough. Set to make good money, Krejci's one way all-offense is welcomed while Richards' leadership will be missed. Tim Erixon is a good, young, cheap NHL-ready d-man who has fairly high CON but is position on my depth chart made him expandable. Glencross is a good role player who was always my best 4th liner whenever he was used. Bourque who basically is a salary dump is going to fight with Boyd for the 12th guy spot now.
I guess you can say I don't really plan on building through drafts since I'm again dealing a first round pick.
I'll work with what's in place and let the future take care of itself.

Re: Calgary/Boston
Regarding Krejci...like Schneider in the LA/DET deal, Krejci's rights cannot be traded as a player under the age of 28 (Rule 9D1). For this trade to be processed, Krejci will have to be signed at the formula calculation by Boston and then traded to Calgary.
Julien asked me about applying the franchise tag to Krejci since he is up for a new contract. We're in the process of evaluating this request. It does defeat the purpose of a franchise tag because it's supposed to serve as a "hometown discount" for a long-term deal.

Re: Calgary/Boston
Seconded on my end (pending the sign-'n-swap, of course).
Krejci was an offensive phenom, but Richards fits my team with a better mix of leadership, defense and special teams. I might save a little bit when it's all said and done with the swap. Glencross is a decent player for the bottom 6 who comes in cheaper than Bourque and with the same length of contract. Erixon fills a role on my defense as someone who can grow into my top-4 and puts some pressure off the guys I will draft. Having 4 second round picks in a cluster this season should help, and should get me better players than the 3rd and 4th i gave up, and having 2 1sts next season with that draft should work well for getting talent in when talent will be needed, contract-wise, in a few seasons.
E: I really need to not do this stuff after 10 PM at night.

Re: Calgary/Boston
I also agree on a sign and swap deal.
Let's also note that no guy named Fisher is involved in this trade. I guess my man Jason meant Richards.
Let's see how this unfolds.

Re: Calgary/Boston
As I mentioned to Julien, something got lost in translation re: draft picks. We'll have it fixed asap

Re: Calgary/Boston
Edited initial trade to make draft pick works. As discussed with Jason, we both agree on this and make it our final answer.

Re: Calgary/Boston
Upon further Committee review, this trade is approved by the thinnest of margins.
The best way to evaluate this deal was to remove the supplementary pieces and look at it on the basis of Krejci for Richards + CGY 1st '13. There's a high likelihood that CGY 1st' '13 will be in the 23-26 range as the Northwest Division is still one of the weakest in the league and the Flames are the reigning champs. The 2013 draft is reported to be deeper than this year's draft class and the pick could always be used as currency to acquire a playoff rental player or move up in the first round. We have to start looking at draft picks on their implied value as well, which may be higher than the pick itself, since a fair amount of draft picks are re-traded.
If the pick were used to acquire, say, an expiring Ed Jovanovski (just a hypothetical name) or Saku Koivu, a player who could be very helpful in a playoff run, it could give that piece of this trade a lot more value than just a first round draft selection.
Krejci is one of the few 90 OF players in the file and it keeps this trade from making a whole lot of sense. Richards was overpaid in free agency last season, though he is still an effective player with a high LE.
In all honesty, it's a trade that none of us felt a strong conviction to pass, especially given the other Boston trades that were slanted in the opposition's favor. But, in knowing that it was a deal that would just be re-posted again with likely just a draft pick added from one side, and probably a 2014 one at that, we felt it best to just send it through and hope that the Richards + 1st portion works out well enough to be worth Krejci's very valuable 90 OF.
It's not the best of trades and it's a decision that I may come to regret. It's one that I've thought about all week and still am not sure which way I want to lean, but it needs to be ruled on and I'd rather bite the bullet than let it sit in purgatory and have attempt number two to rule on in a day or two.
