Detroit -- Washington

Post by CapsGM »

To Detroit:
Mike Green [75]
Carolina's first round pick in 2011 (27th overall)

To Washington:
Nikita Gusev [61]
Brian Lashoff [75]
Los Angeles' first round pick in 2011 (19th overall)
Philadelphia's third round pick in 2011 (76th overall)

This trade reduces my payroll by close to $4M and gets me well below the current $56M cap. It sucks to deal a world-class offensive defenseman in Green, but with Andrei Markov signed at a nice discount for six years it's a bit redundant to keep both players. The fact that Green will make $7M next year is another reason to deal him, as I don't want a bunch of 400K Bates Battaglia's filling up my third and fourth lines.

Moving up eight picks in the first round gives me a bit more flexibility on taking the guy I want. Gusev will eventually develop into an Alex Semin-type player and meets the need for some high-end prospect talent in the system (and meets the need for more Russians). Lashoff is signed for a very long time, he can immediately take Green's roster spot and still hasn't reached his ceiling; he also has the versatility to play as a winger a la Brent Burns.

Hello mr committee , me again...

I've been wanting to get an all star defenseman to support my young team. Green is only 25 years old. +/- was a +40ish last year. Will help Perry score 40+ goals (he scored 39 this year). I have a real point man to replace good old Lindstrom. So I can build around Perry, Backstrom and Green all very young along with #1, 10 and 27 overall.

I am actually trading down to 27 overall from 19, no big deal. Gusev's inconsistency I already have in other players. Lashoff is a good defensive player that I will have to replace at draft time.

Yeah, when added to the Backstrom deal, the whole package looks like a very even trade.
