Hey guys, hope that you've all enjoyed the time off. I know I have.

Two weeks until we start simming again. A few things to keep in mind as we head toward training camp. I ask, respectfully, that you guys try to do some of your preseason roster moves ahead of time. Inviting prospects to camp, extending contract offers to them, setting up training for the preseason, bringing up AHL fodder to fill some roster spots for camp, etc. I'd like to do these things over the course of the next two weeks rather than all at once when preseason games are scheduled to begin. I know everybody will have different lines game to game, and that's perfectly fine. I'd just like to have the roster things and training out of the way as best I can. I'd really appreciate it.

I'd like to be more of a stickler about the lines thread. We've had some instances where the .lns hasn't worked and we've delayed the sim to try and track the GM down. I don't want to get caught up in doing that again this season. When you make line changes, please update the thread. It takes all of two minutes. I don't think it's a lot to ask. Also, make sure that if you've called up an AHL player, that you indicate that to us in your email with the updated lines. Again, this is the beauty of our sim schedule. You don't have to worry about in-sim injuries causing you to lose a back-to-back or whatever.

Contract offers for current roster players are frozen effective immediately. We don't want teams to be able to get around the cap by signing a contract extension to an over-30 player to get under the cap. Also, we need to find a better solution to the 30% rule. For now, the only allowable contracts will be farm players (follow the current 30% rule) and prospects.

We will be sticking with the three underager farm rule for this season. It won't be an issue until training camp is over, but make sure I get a list of your underagers.

We will be paying much closer attention to the salary cap this year, both the cap ceiling and the cap floor. Obviously it takes a bit of sorting to get the actual cap number in preseason with prospects on the pro roster and everything. But we will be following this much more closely this season and have far less patience with teams struggling with the cap. Last year, a couple teams were below the floor for more than half the season. There's no way that will happen this year.

We are instituting a games played rule for goaltenders. The maximum any goaltender can play will be 72 games. The Rulebook will reflect this change, so be aware of it. Once a goaltender reaches 72 games, the backup will automatically be put in and stay in. So be cognizant of this situation because the last thing you want is your goaltender having to sit out a must win in game #80.

I'm hoping to put together more chats for this season so we can build camaraderie and increase activity around here. I'll probably decide on a monthly date and organize one each month. Maybe two depending on how they do.

Sometime in September, I'll make a post about a fantasy hockey league. It'll likely be on Yahoo. If you're interested, keep an eye out for it. Similarly, check out the Fantasy Football thread if you're interested. It'd be nice to get one of these going and it's not time consuming at all. Just set your lineup once a week.

I will be discussing a sim schedule with Nick and Ryan. There's a decent chance that it will stay the same, but we will let you guys know.

If I think of anything else to add to this post, I'll be sure to do so. If you notice any of your absent fellow GMs on MSN or whatever, shoot them a message and get them back in the fold. There's a few guys going on a couple weeks without checking in. As I said, they know when the season starts, but I'd like to get things in order before the simming begins if possible.

Why not just count cap hits from their current contracts? That's the way it should be done anyways. I suggested making a cap number/depth chart forum so each team can log their cap total themselves, and we all have copies of players.ehm with current player salaries.

I hate to say it, but I can't expect teams to update their cap. It's hard enough to get some guys to pay enough attention to send lines.

We're constantly looking for ways to improve the financials of the league and this freeze on extensions gives us time to devise some better policies.

I was only referring to UFA contracts. They're not bound by the 30% anyways, so why limit them now unless you intend to put a new rule in place?

I wrote a simple program to count up cap hits. All it needs is a current players.ehm and one from the beginning of the season (for players that have since been re-signed) to count up totals. Speaking of which, does EHM itself actually pay players based on their new contracts? Not that most teams care about cold hard cash...

Yeah, the dollar amount of an extension that is signed always supercedes the old one, even if it's signed at the start of the year. And teams are always eager to extend their future UFA's, even more so if they can get them to lower their price since EHM goes by the latest contract. Signing a player to a one year, $10 million deal then extending them immediately to half that cost is an extreme form of such circumvention.

You have 4.625 m in buyout penalties, that's why.

Also like I said this is a 23 man roster, if you plan on running with 21 and replacing some farm fodder with 400k players it won't be as high.

Another quick note. Just to avoid any problems down the road, all contracts will require a 400k base salary. Obviously with a two-way, it shouldn't affect the farm cap very much. But from here on out, everything starts at 400k. The rulebook will be updated to show this change the next time I upload.

Guys, when sending me instructions, please post things in their proper forum as well. Post your call-ups, demotions, and releases in the waiver wire. Post about offering default contracts to prospects. Some of you are waiving guys who are waiver-eligible or calling up players who may be waiver-eligible after camp and other GMs need to be aware of those moves.
