TB - COL - VAN
To TB:
Mirko Hoefflin (79)
To VAN:
Evgeni Svechnikov (61)
To COL:

Avs retain 25% of Hoefflin's salary.
Confirmed. Hoefflin will make a good #3 centre, assuming he can stay out of the box.

Vancouver agrees.
Liked the 43 points, but didn't think Hoefflin would be so eager to repeat his 258 pims.
Save some salary space, take some time off my teams penalty kill.

Avs accept - easy 4th for taking on 800k. I assume VAN is retaining 50% - it's not mentioned.

Vancouver isn't retaining anything, I just needed a bit of salary retained to fit Hoefflin under the cap.

Hoefflin has 4 years on his contract = (29+82*3) = 275 games. 800k retention over the remaining ~29 games of the season would cost 800k*275/29 = 7.586M, which I can't possibly see COL affording. Over 2 seasons, that's 800k*275/111 = 1.982M.

Re: TB - COL - VAN
How does 7.586M come into play on 25% retention on a contract with a total of 12.8M? The total couldn't possibly exceed 3.2M, before factoring in games played this season.

Because you're trying to retain three+ full seasons' worth of salary in a third of a season.TBGM - Geoff wrote: ↑Wed Feb 16, 2022 2:23 pmHow does 7.586M come into play on 25% retention on a contract with a total of 12.8M? Imagine you traded away a $1M x 2y player with one game left in the season (not possible in EHEC but legal in the NHL) and tried to retain, say, 1M x 83 games for the remaining game of the season. You'd have a penalty of 83M for 1 game.

This is way too complicated. There is no way 1/4 of a $3.2 mil contract should ever come to 7+ million. Do we really need these daily cap machinations in a sim league?

That’s the way the salary cap is calculated IRL and that’s the way we’ve been playing with since the league has started.

Sure, but retaining 800k should not turn into $7 mil... that is insane. And not at all what I thought I was agreeing to.

Re: TB - COL - VAN
Josh correctly pointed out elsewhere that you can't retain more than the next two seasons' worth of cap hits. So here's more math:
Max retention is $3.2M * (29+82)/82 * 50% = 2.166M total
Hoefflin has $3.2M * (29+82*3)/82 = 10.732M total to pay out. So max retention actually only covers 20% of his salary, or 640k worth.
2.166M * 82/29 = 6.125M to retain over one season, or 2.166M * 82/(29+82) = 1.6M to retain over two seasons. I still don't think COL can fit it into one.
Note if you're retaining for one season, the pro-ration is irrelevant, and 50% or 25% are easy peasy to calculate. It's only complicated if you retain on a 2+ year contract, or choose to spread the penalty over 2 years.
Also, if you don't do the pro-ration properly, you end up reducing the total cap penalties. It has to be done this way to prevent salary from vanishing into thin air.

Re: TB - COL - VAN
Is there an option to only retain one year of his deal? I know in my other league most retention deals are only for that season, unless the GMs agree to do longer.
If not, I suppose I'll use a retention slot for next year.

You can retain as much as you want up to the max, but no, the retention can't change from year-to-year. The NHL doesn't do that either.

OK, so to be clear if I extend it into next season, that is a $1.6 mil hit this season and $1.6 mil next season?
