Draft Precisions

Hi Guys,

I'm just trying to figure out a few things and here is one:

The real rookies are replacing the game-generated rookies.

1. How do you proceed to rate them?
2. How do you know about them? Do you use the official CSB ranking or does the game generates a modified CSB ranking based on what they did in the game prior to the draft?

1. Rating is done by using any available scouting reports and a little guesswork. It will never be perfect.

2. There are a number of good sites with scouting lists and the occasional article about some of the lower-ranked players. Yahoo Sports, ESPN, TSN, NHL draft site, and Eliteprospects (esp for Euro players) are some. But once you get outside the top 30 or so guys, it gets harder to find detailed information about a player's game, so you're trying to guess a little and get some variety in the draft. As for the CSB, you generally want higher-ranked real-life guys to be near the top, but the game-generated CSB is messed up. It seriously underrates defensemen, and overrates low-pot/high-con goalies (which can be a problem since goalies don't boost).

In (almost) every posted trade including picks, i notice GM saying "deep draft"...

WATCH OUT!

This does NOT mean the top 90 draftees will be good.
It just means that we'll be able to get quality draftees in the 2nd round as well.

So acquiring a 4th round pick won't give necessarly you a NHL player...

What it means is that we'll try to create a draft that has many useful, NHL-caliber players in it. It does not mean that you'll find an NHL-ready #2 center in the 4th round. Well, not necessarily... Later rounds are where you should be able to find flawed but potentially useful guys if you draft well.

And remember, some real guys are in the draft pool, but no ceilings or attributes have been done yet.

4th and 5th rounders is where the POT and CON boosters come into play.....and some of the one dimensional player also.

An that all depends on your take on exactly what "good players " are.......if you are looking for a 50 goal scorer in the 5th round....good luck.....but if you are hard hitting HAG type player or a good stay at home D man.........then that is possible

My point is:
You won't get a better 4th-5th round pick draftee in 2015 than in 2014.
You will get a better 2nd round pick draftee in 2015 than in 2014.

There is steals in alot of the drafts.......Take Connor Rankin for example......7th rounder......I dont think that there is too many 3-6 rounders as good as him reallly......

It's all relative. And you'll all have to wait a bit to see just what's available when.

Of course you can make steals (this is not my point).

I'm not saying 4th-5th picks are bad,
I'm not pointing your drafting skills,
I'm saying that some GMs might think, because it's supposed to be a deep draft, that prospects still available in 4th to 7th round of the 2015 draft will be better than these who were still available in 4th to 7th round of the 2014 draft.

Good thread.

Just wanted to chime in and say that a players salary, and the time of season, has a significant impact on their value. Creating a certain amount of cap space by trading away a player for less then market value (or in my case, flat our waiving them) can be worth it in specific circumstances.

Yes because most 5 pot 76 con boosters don't even boost once, let alone twice in a year.

His point is fair, some people on hfboards have been talking about the draft not being as great in the 15-30 spots as once thought... others say there is lots of depth in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. But how strong rounds 4+ are is really up to the whims of whoever's making the draftees.

Yep. And like other years, the draft will be constructed so that there is some sort of quality in the lower rounds. I don't want GMs giving up after 60 or 90 picks.
