An award has been determined in the Chet Pickard arbitration.

NSH comps: Rask, Pavelec; proposed 2.5M for 2 years
Arbitrator comps: Varlamov, Rinne

This is a unique situation because you have two goaltenders who are almost exactly similar in POT. In this case, the less experienced starter, Pickard, has a higher CON than the starting goaltender, Rinne.

The most difficult part of this arbitration process for Pickard is attempting to determine how much he deserves to be paid based on potential rather than based on his track record. Obviously, though Pickard will be as good or better than Rinne, it is hard to justify paying more than what Rinne makes, though Rinne was signed under the old policy. Understanding this, my arbitrator proposed 3M per year for the 2 years requested by NSH.

What it boils down to for me is this. At what point does Pickard overtake Rinne, do they split time, or does one of them get traded and wind up being a relatively cheap starting option for another team. Unfortunately, I cannot determine that, but I can give Pickard a reasonable amount.

To me, reasonable in this case would be settling right in the middle. At 2.75M per, NSH still pays more for his tandem goaltender than a team with a strong starter and a marginal backup would pay.

Seb, you can accept/reject Pickard at 2.75M per year for 2 years.
