Oh No They Didn't

Post by Commish Bub(NYR) »

Hey, it's Free Agency Madness in the NHL today!

How about kicking things off with the Blue Jackets reportedly signing Wisniewski for 6 years, $33M. You wanna do that, Adam?

That is a crazy move by Columbus but yeah, with the pool of UFA being what it is this year, not much talented players, prices for UFA's will be high

Quite true, but these early high $$$ signings still always blow my mind.

Great signing for the Jackets. Wis should be good for at least 40 pts, 100 hits and 100 blocked shots. Considering Hejda fell through, they were able to go after Wisniewski a little harder.

If the salary cap's going to continue going up, there's nothing wrong with 5.5M.

CBJ's making a statement this offseason. Carter and Wis. Now they need to keep going. They still have good cap room to play with.

So who gets signed to an offer sheet today? I can't imagine someone doesn't take a shot at Stamkos.

Avs are making moves, even Florida's been active. More importantly, Canes sign Tim Brent.

Varlamov! Not bad. First rounder is questionable though.

Varlamov solid addition, but that's overpayment to me. What does this make Cory Schneider worth now?

So that put's Kaberle's value at what? 12 million a year?

Kaberle sucks. Which is why he's un-signed.

Buddy did you look at him play or what?

I would have taken him with that salary over a healthy Markov.

Is Bujad any good? Is Erik Cole washed up/worth 4.25M?

Didn't see them play much.

That James Wish deal set an early tone for today. Overpayments across the board aside from enforcers like Eager, Hordy, etc.

And like Colorado said, Budaj is garbage.

Cole has never scored much without Staal. You'll come to love/hate his one move in the offensive zone.

Overpayment on Cole, Flesichman, Ward, Ehrhoff, Wisniewski, Sturm, to name a few.

How is there such a thing as overpayment when the cap keeps going up 2-4M per season?

Impossible to overpay in that regard.

Just because the cap went up that doesn't make Erik Cole, Tomas Fleischmen, and Ville Leino $4.5M per year players. That doesn't make Wisniewski a $5.5M per year guy either. 10 years to commit to Ehrhoff is simply idiocy. $2.25M to Sturm is ridiculous as well. Guy should just retire.

10 years to Ehrhoff is smart. Cap circumvention. Easy to buy out after 6 or 7 years.

Re: Wisniewski: What did the other 50 point defensemen make last year? http://www.nhlnumbers.com/players?posit ... &year=2012

Columbus has to overpay. There's nothing to get players to go to Columbus other than money.

Teams pay based on need. If they overpay, they don't care. If they have the cap space, then it doesn't matter. It's just a number. A number that will lead to a lockout, but the players union is happy.

Let me clarify on Ehrhoff, maybe not smart, but crafty.

Market value is fucked up. I understand that. Which is why the league's headed for another lockout. But, with a 64M cap, you have $2,782,608 and some change per player.

That's where the problem lies. Not with the money guys are getting. The cap's simply too high.

Kaberle's good for nothing but consistently being a top 10 offensive defenseman every year. Scrub.

So the Rangers got Richards, 9 years at $60 million ($6.67 million cap hit), and the Kings got Gagne, 2 years at $7 million ($3.5 million cap hit).

And Capitals get Vokoun for one year at 1.5 million.

So Philly trades two star players and signs Brysgalov to some redonkulous contract when they could have kept Carter and Richards and gone after Vokoun, who is older than Brysgalov but neither are permanent fixes.

Colorado gets raped in the ass by trading for Varlamov who they could have signed to an offer sheet and would only given up a 2nd based on the contract he signed with them. Instead they send Washington a 2nd and quite possible a top 10 pick? They could have also gone after Vokoun.
