McNiven gets the call in Motor City

It has been an up and down season for the Calgary Flames: a .500 record, yet only sitting one point back of Minnesota for 2nd in the Northwest Division.

After a tough loss at home on Friday at the hands of the Canucks, the Flames head to Detroit to face off with the Red Wings.

"We know they're better than their record," says leading scorer Auston Matthews. "There's so many good teams in this league, you can't sleep on anyone."

Matthews is leading the way with 12 points on the year, but will need help from the rest of the team if the Flames want to impress this season. After Matthews, the team's leading scorers are Nekolenko (8), Rielly (7) and Vilardi (7.)

Since moving from 2nd line centre to 1st line right wing, Nathan MacKinnon has begun to find the twine more.

"He's so fast and just knows where to go all the time," says Matthews, with a slight grin. "He makes it easy; just put the puck towards him and he figures out the rest."

The Flames face off with a struggling Red Wings team that is looking for answers as of late. Leading the way in scoring for Detroit is veteran Centre Jonathan Toews, an idol for Matthews.

"Yeah, I used to love watching him growing up." Matthews says "He's so good - even now - a definite leader for that team."

The Flames will keep mostly the same lineup from Friday's game. Matt Puempel will draw in on the 4th line right wing, and goaltender Michael McNiven will get his 3rd start of the season.
