Washington/Colorado

Post by GM Office Q »

To Washington:
F Zach Parise (78)

To Colorado:
F Oskar Osala (76)
D Dougie Hamilton (80)

Pretty predictable move. I've got a good group of forwards and not so good (at least, EHM hates it) on the blueline. I am dead last in goals against, but I haven't had too much trouble putting the puck in the net. Parise obviously adds a nice weapon to the Capitals with only giving up Osala in terms of roster players. Dougie has been developing nicely in Hershey and I think is ready to get some pro minutes. He's already dependable defensively, which is more than most of my defenseman can say. He will develop into something similar to Parise, hopefully faster now with some NHL minutes and switching him to OF/DF training. The 'price' that Washington pays for getting a fully developed player is Oskar Osala, who is actually a type of guy I desparately need for my bottom six, or for a hitting line as he is a beast at 86 HI and 75 St.

With Hamilton, I've got a top three of Doughty, Hamilton and Klein on the blueline, something I desparately need, and should have had from the beginning of the season. I believe the group I have now, particularly as my core group is all signed to nice contracts, should be able to make a serious playoff push next season. I went 8-2 in my last ten games, many of those games without Wolski, so who knows, maybe even this season.

Scoring has been an issue since I traded Ovechkin and Parise should solve that problem. He’s a gifted scorer and fits the system well. His contract is also very manageable, although he’s up for arbitration after 2014.

It’s tough to give up Dougie, who’s spent the last five months developing in the AHL and is probably the best defensive prospect not playing in EHEC yet, but defense is my strength with the emergence of Morgan Rielly and having Cam Barker in beast mode. Ideally I would have traded Barker for a scoring forward, replaced him with Hamilton, and have a gnarly top four with Markov/Dougie/Alzner/Rielly, but (1) I wouldn’t have gotten a player of Parise’s calibre with Barker as the centerpiece, and (2) nobody likes Cam Barker.

Osala is a tough loss since he’s a great checking forward, although he is a tad overpaid for his role as a very good fourth line/okay third line winger. But he’s been sulky and not as beast as he was in previous seasons, so I think it’s time for him to GTFO.

I thought I’d be a bubble playoff team after trading my franchise player in the summer, but being three points out of first in the East nearly two-thirds through the season made me realize that my team is better than I anticipated. Adding a top forward bolsters my roster and is a necessary move if I want to get further in the playoffs.
