The Hurricanes deep playoff run all of one year removed from drafting in the top 10 meant that it would be an interesting draft year... it also mean that the team would not be drafting a player that is likely to make an impact nearly as soon as Caufield, who could break in to the lineup by seasons end in Raleigh.
#23OA Tyler Kleven
To say that GM Greybill has a type when he's looking for defensive defensemen would be most accurate. Kleven is a strong defensive player that brings heavy hitting and a solid shot. That said, his impact is likely at least a couple seasons out which suits the Hurricanes just fine. With Kevin Gravel and Jamie McBain coming off the books that season, one of the two spots at least should be open for Kleven to take a shot.
#53OA Marat Khustnutdinov
One of the biggest issues the Hurricanes are looking at long-term is being able to eventually replace the man who's been the best player in the league since its inception: Eric Staal. Marat doesn't project to be on that level, but what he does project to be is one of the best playmakers in the league with an excellent two-way game. While he won't have the size to really throw his weight around, a top line eventually built around Marat feeding Caufield pucks that he absolutely buries on the top line for years to come should be enough to give opposing goalies nightmares. This pick does come as a risk though, as part of the leagues changes to prospect development Marat only gets one shot to boost, meaning he either becomes elite or he likely never makes the jump.
#83 Christoffer Sedoff
Again, Greybill has a type when it comes to defensive dmen. Sedoff has the ability, despite being a late 3rd, to at the very least end up being a contributor on defense for the Canes long-term. No boost necessary here, Sedoff looks like a potential 2nd pairing defense-first guy, which if you can find that in the 3rd round, you take it.
#113 Dylan Garand
You wouldn't think the team with one of the best young tandems in net in the league would look to take a goalie any time soon... you'd be wrong. Garand looks set to join whichever of Brizgala and Sandstrom emerge as the #1 in the coming seasons offering not just a cheap replacement for one, but a highly effective one
#129 Lucas Mercuri and #143 Gunnarwolfe Fontaine
Two picks for the leagues all-name team at the very least. Both represent a chance to add some quality depth in the AHL as some of the teams prospects start to knock on the door of making the show.
