Rest of Offseason
As I said in another thread, my apologies for being so slow with EHEC transactions and other things while we're in this holding pattern. Preseason games are just about 3.5 weeks away and I really haven't done most of what I set out to do. I haven't even started the schedule either.
First and foremost, I feel that I need to tell you up front and with time to spare that 2012-13 may be my final season as the Commissioner of EHEC. If all goes according to plan for me, and I will keep you updated, I am planning a major cross-country move next June and it would make maintaining EHEC an incredibly difficult task, especially with what I would have to do when I got to my destination, not to mention the entire act of getting there. I've reached out to some GMs to gauge their interest in assuming my duties and keeping the league running, but, as of yet, there hasn't been a lot of feedback.
Before you all go into panic mode, my plans are in the preliminary stages and far from set in stone. I just felt that it would be best if I let you know because I'm sure it will dictate the plans of some teams. I would have liked to tell you sooner, but it's been a somewhat rapid development, and part of what's been weighing on my mind. I will admit that this complete change of scenery is something I am committed to doing if my finances fall in order, so I will be working at it.
Now, as for current league business. The CBA talks I wanted to have are likely to hit a standstill with just 25 or so days before the game-generated preseason starts. I had every intention of having our own talks to improve the league and some of its more pressing issues, but who knows if that will come to fruition. Frankly, I've had so little time to think about the league that I don't even know what to discuss, outside of competitive balance and line restrictions. Feel free to use this thread to post any proposals you think are worth taking a look at.
I'm going to try and enter everything this weekend that has gone on in the league and get an updated file up. I also need to get a start on the schedule, which is quite an undertaking, and a pain in the ass.
I've been very impressed with the number of GMs checking in even though I have been pretty much MIA. Like I said, I sincerely apologize for that. Only four GMs have failed to check in over the last week. I want to thank you for your commitment level.
Feel free to spout off about anything you want at this point. I'll also answer any questions you may have about the future of the league. PM me if you might be interested in taking the reins and seeing if you can make EHEC work and keep everybody around.

Shit. I'll help in any way I can to keep the league going.
As far as CBA talks go, I think the current system is pretty solid. Young stars are now eligible to make close to what their free agent veteran counterparts would be demanding, so there's no longer a huge gulf between the desirability of young controllable talent and "overpaid" veterans. At this point, adjusting the salary cap upwards will probably be sufficient to keep everyone happy (or me anyway; if I'm going to keep my team's core together long-term, a $60M cap isn't going to cut it) and constraining GM's to the point where they can't keep the team they built, not because of poor management but because of a league-mandated salary structure, is just going to hurt long-term interest in the league. In that environment, the only way to win would be to run your organization like Tampa Bay's (which isn't a style I personally agree with but will I admit it is very effective management) where you alternate between rebuilding and winning now rather than trying to build sustained success.
Adam, I hope you reconsider stepping down, but I also understand that sometimes you have to make difficult choices in life.

While EHEC would never be the same without Adam running it, if core members that have been around since MILF or the start of EHEC were still here I'd love to remain a part of it. Best of luck to Adam on making his adventure a reality.

Jesus, I would've expected more of a reaction here than three comments. Doesn't anyone else care about this?
Also, Justin, you need to take that stick our of your ass. There's absolutely no call for resorting to personal insults based on my opinion of your management style. I didn't even bother mentioning the part about your browbeating of potential trade partners who don't see eye-to-eye with you on the value of a prospect you want to acquire.
On second thought, why don't you leave the stick in there and go fuck yourself with it?

Wasn't it only a year ago that we were assured that Adam would do everything to keep the league going? I understand life happens and shit changes but I committed to this fucken dreadful team knowing it might take 3-4 years to rebuild the team and now it's all for nothing. Unless the future of this league is gaurnteed, I won't be sticking around for a final season.

Re: Rest of Offseason
Really? That's the route that you want to go with this? Fine, I'll play along. Last season was the third season of EHEC and you were a lottery team for the third time in as many years.TorontoGM wrote:Wasn't it only a year ago that we were assured that Adam would do everything to keep the league going? I committed to running this league as long as I saw myself doing it. I never once said it was definitely over. Furthermore, if you think there's some kind of big conspiracy behind this, answer me why I traded Nash, Backes, and Mason just a couple months prior to my post.
I come first. My fiancee comes first. My life comes first. Sorry. If that's a problem for you, I'm sure we'll carry on just fine without you, whether this is the last season of EHEC or not.
Forgive me for not wanting to spin my wheels for the rest of my life so I could commit 25-30+ hours a week to a simulation hockey league. While I have the ability to do that, I don't mind doing that. If this move comes to fruition, I simply cannot do that. I see no point in continuing my involvement if I cannot meet the standards I have set for myself over the first three seasons of the league. You think everything you did is in vain? Hah. What about the countless hours I put into everything? You think I made this post on some whim without really, seriously thinking about it? Thinking about how disappointing it would be for all of you. Thinking about how it makes me feel to let down a lot of people I consider to be my friends.
I felt that I owed it to you guys to make this post well in advance, able to keep you up on the likelihood of things happening, since it's still 9-10 months away. Whatever you decide Mike is fine by me. Forgive my insensitivity.

Adam has put in a ridiculous amount of time into this league and I have nothing but respect for what he's done. I don't know how the quality of the league will be if someone else took over, but I have put as much time into this league than any other non-Committee member over the last three years and am perfectly fine with whatever decision Adam makes regarding the state of EHEC.

I'm sticking around that's for sure.
With the quality people here at EHEC, I don't see this league going down the drain.
I could do whatever I'm asked to do in the future.
@ Parker: I thought the same thing about the amount of responses. I've been looking here twice a day while working 18h shifts this weekend that's why I wasn't as loud as I'm used to be.
Adam, I hope you can stick around even if you had to resign from Commish status. Columbus will always be yours no matter how this ends.

Re: Rest of Offseason
Adam has been a tremendous commissioner. I've also been understandably rattled by this declaration, I'll admit that (I haven't said anything thus far, and I'm chatty) - we've all invested a lot of time and effort (well, not all, but many) into this league, but it all pales in comparison, and I think it's pretty audacious to get mad about it. All good things must come to an end (even TNG), and it was going to happen sooner or later. We have a lot of time to absorb this. At the very least, we'll have one more fantastic season, and for that I'm greatful, even as a manager of a team stuck in irrelevance.
And I don't even know if it'll come to that. Adam's hard work would be hard to replace, but I know in me, anyway, the respect I have has grown into loyalty, a loyalty to the concept of this league, and I've got plenty of free time...
Anyway. Viva la revolucion, Viva Burke, Viva EHEC, and I hope we can cobble together something in the next 10 months. How many people here have played this silly little game on and off for a whole fucking decade? This is a fun thing we do, even if very few people understand it.

Re: Rest of Offseason
I don't want to make it sound like I don't appreciate the contributions of so many who have made this league possible. Ultimately, my decision to post about it now was so that I didn't blindside anybody with it during the season, or worse, in June right before it happened. I do want to stress that there are no certainties whatsoever that I relocate. It could only take one major expenditure between now and next June to make things nearly impossible. Hell, as of now, it's not even guaranteed that the pastures are greener on the other side. I don't know.
I'd rather cover my bases and let you guys know well in advance. Not to mention, posting now gives a chance for a leader to come to the forefront. I've approached a couple GMs and will approach a couple more. Finding somebody with my work ethic towards EHEC is impossible. That's not being boastful, it's just the facts. It's just illogical to expect somebody to do what I do. I don't even know why I do it some days, so I could never expect it from somebody else.
My goal is to have the league in a position to succeed if somebody else needs to take it over. For you guys to know ahead of time about the future is important in that regard. The foundation cannot be weakened if EHEC is to continue. If a replacement arises from within, or even somebody to just help me out even more, would be a blessing.
Not everybody is going to take it in a positive way, and I apologize to Mike for my response to him. He was, understandably, frustrated, as I'm sure most of you were when you read my post. However, that kind of reaction isn't beneficial to the league now, nor will it be in the future.
Whether I'm running this thing or somebody else is, I want it to succeed. There's a legacy at stake here. Not necessarily the legacy that leagues had in EHM's heyday, but a personal legacy in each and every one of us who made this a thriving league for three seasons and will make it thrive for a fourth.
I just wanted to be fair to you guys. It's as simple as that. I can't see into the future. I can only prepare you for what may be on the horizon.

Clearly I never learned to think before speaking and I'm sorry for jumping the gun. I'm just frustrated cause I suck at EHM and well this is by far the most time and effort I've put into a league. I just don't want it all to go to waste, we've all put a bit of personality into this and I love playing this game with all of you.
Again, sorry to Adam. What you do here is nothing short of amazing.
I wish I could do more around here but I have no experience editting a file or maintaining a league. I've spent the better part of the last decade playing this game and to be honest, I didn't really have a firm grasp on EHM until I joined EHEC.

Just back from four days in San Diego -- that's why I haven't responded before.
Adam, I'm surprised you haven't burnt out already, to be honest. And if you decide after this season that you can't go on, then so be it. The league wouldn't be the same without your leadership, but there's no reason to think right now that it would necessarily fold. Who knows how things will play out in the coming months? I'm still going to carry on in the EHEC as if the future is indefinite...kind of like real life.

Re: Rest of Offseason
Consider it forgotten. I take things too personally when it comes to the league.TorontoGM wrote:Again, sorry to Adam. What you do here is nothing short of amazing.
As the season progresses, there's a chance that some other people try their hands at simming, just to see if there is somebody I can turn the reins over to. I know that Ryan and Tommy don't have the time for it and I'm not going to place that burden on them. The problem is that the most reliable of people here are in their late 20s and up and have more than enough obligations on their plate as it is.
The in-season job tasks aren't the problem. It's the offseason stuff that gets really tedious and time-consuming. I can finish a 14-game sim in 35 minutes, so I've gotten pretty efficient at this. Sometimes, stuff like that makes me think that I would be able to continue my duties. My concern is the other stuff - the draft class, the schedule, the AHL playoffs, etc. Things that are luxuries, in a way, but essential to the way that we want things to run.
I may also be overestimating how busy I'd be, but, being in a new place and wanting to see and experience new things does take its time. If I can get somebody to step up and move the draft and free agency along while I'm in my transitional phase, then, yes, the in-season simming and whatnot can be done with little or no change, except for a later sim because of the Pacific Time Zone.
I mean, I'm not even that busy now, but I've let a lot of EHEC things slip because it's down on my list of priorities. Adding other priorities to that list would push it down even further. Part of the reason, quite frankly, is burnout. It's a lot on me to keep running this league and almost all of the file maintenance tasks without a lot of help. Not to mention, having to keep 29 other people happy as much as I can. I take this league personally and there have been nights where I can't sleep because of a post I've made or an unresolved situation is weighing on me. Much like this whole thing and my post to Mike, which I had to come back and apologize for before I could fall asleep last night.
One way or another, things will work out. I'll see to it that I make them work as best I can.

I don't know about the rest but the schedule is not difficult to automate. Now that the entire thing is posted on NHL.com (http://www.nhl.com/ice/schedulebyseason.htm) it can be converted into a schedule.ehm without too much hassle. Hell, I can probably do the pre-season too as long as it ends before EHM's waiver draft day.
I'm sure people would also be willing to help with the draft and AHL playoffs. It's great for the rest of us that Adam does them all himself now but it would probably help his sanity if it was more of a collaborative effort.
As for the CBA, put me in the camp that thinks the current situation is mostly working. I don't think the cap needs to increase much. Salaries aren't going up here the way they are in the NHL and it doesn't make sense to me to have the cap increase just so the top teams can keep their best players indefinitely. The one issue that will come up next offseason is the number of 2010 draftees coming off their ELCs. Some have earned E5 bonuses and will have fair salaries, but a good number have been playing in the AHL at 400k salaries and are set to earn much less than they're worth on their second contrats. But there are many ways to solve that issue.

Regarding 2010 draftees playing in AHL, I guess, my hope would be that they're brought up by the time I run the fastsim in January and I can get a more accurate reading from that advanced file.

I've already started work on the 2013 draft. Nothing major, no POT/CON/other stats, but dates of birth and nationalities of some of the more notable prospects. I can do that no problem, although I'd need input from others when it came to doing the stats.SharksGM wrote:I'm sure people would also be willing to help with the draft and AHL playoffs.

Re: Rest of Offseason
Eventually I'm going to volunteer to fix player histories and career stats for players drafted since 2010. It looks like what happened is the player ID of the draftee was previously associated with a retired or overwritten player, but instead of starting a new history for that player it looks like EHM is just adding to the previous player's history, so some players drafted recently look like they've already been playing professional hockey for 15 years. It's not a big deal and it doesn't actually affect the game, but I'd like to fix it at some point, for the sake of accuracy and my OCD.

Re: Rest of Offseason
Been quiet because I am not sure what to say.
My self centered self went "oh no!!!!" and my heart skipped a few beats. Yes I was disapointed to read that the commish may quit and there is no replacement plan ahead.
I was expecting it though, since Adam kept apologizing for not doing stuff he felt he should have done (even though no one felt the same way). Why is this guy putting so much pressure on himself?
I am in my 40`s and I have seen many leagues fold after the commish quit for all the right reasons (hey I played Front Page Sports football and baseball leagues).
So I understand and fully respect your decision Adam. Still I need awhile to get over this, ok Parker?
Then I am going to beg....

Hey, the league isn't dead, dying, or even on life support. It just may be...different...after this season.

Yup I'm not worried at all. We'll find a way to keep one of the best if not the best existing EHM league alive.

Adam set a pretty high standard. That said, I'm positive with the type of guys we have here we can keep this going. Contributions like figuring out the schedule is a great way to start. The more we take off of Adam's plate, hopefully we can get him to stay. Even as just a GM, we need you man!

Re: Rest of Offseason
Sorry I've had a really hectic summer, and haven't been around much, but just to let you know Adam you are the most dedicated commissioner I've seen in 10+ years and I'm not going anywhere as a GM (fortunately, or unfortunately). When the summer ends, and this thing picks up again with some fantastic pre-season hockey, I'm more than glad to help you out anyway I can.

Re: Rest of Offseason
I never really know how personally people take things over the internet, specifically a virtual reality hockey management league.Parker wrote:Jesus, I would've expected more of a reaction here than three comments.
Parker, I am very sorry for: winning, rebuilding after losing my best player forever, and wanting to win. It's to bad I let Vinny play the last game of the season to lock up the Presidents' trophy
ps: ur sig is so cool bro

I'm of course back from my gold panning circuit so I'm a bit behind. Either way. Adam you have done an awesome job with this league since it's inception and I want to see it continue. I'm probably not as active on the boards as I would like to be but I am willing to step up and help out to keep this league running.

Checking Dan's schedule now to make sure everybody plays 82 games and 41 home/road.
Big help to me. Much appreciated.

Being the least experienced guy here (I think) I'm not sure how much help I could provide, but if any, I'd certainly be willing to do as much as my abilities and time allow.

Re: Rest of Offseason
Was just thinking that since we are so close to getting our season started that we should just wait and see what the new CBA is before we start changing our own CBA? Everything seems to be working nicely right now. Should the season start on time or a few weeks in we would have the whole season to banter ideas back and forth on what to use in our sim and what not to use.
One interesting thought would be to have the salary cap change up or down each year. Yep I know dropping it can be a big issue for some teams but that's why the hard cap was put in place. We've not seen the cap drop yet so how bout use a random number generator to determine if the cap goes up or down?
