Better get them done by the time the EHEC Stanley Cup ends or face a 10% penalty. (Just post players and I'll calculate contracts)
The facewash in general should be outlawed in the NHL. It's completely unnecessary. As far as "good taste" goes, unless he's chilling with his sisters I'd say thats up for debate as well. Burish calling Pronger gutless on TV right after CHI beat PHI for the cup, Eager is a fucking lunatic (i still count him as a Hawk) etc. The Hawks are no saints.

Terribly late hit. Don't give me the Horton head-up shit. That was two strides after he moved the puck.
Could be a series changer, one way or another. Boston could be fired up, but Horton had been their best player.

Re: biting?!?
I just thought the 10 games next season was a little much but I won't argue Rome being suspended for the rest of the series. I just think people are overreacting to a devastating hit from a pretty CLEAN player. I wouldn't call it a blindeside cause Horton was looking at the pass but it wasn't very north-south.Commissioner (CBJ) wrote:That's fair. Re: biting?!?
This is what gets me about the defense of this hit. Why is a player not entitled to watching the play to read it? Especially with such a gap of time in between pass and hit. Lucic and Horton each took two strides, Lucic's with the puck on his stick. If he's blindly watching a back pass, that's one thing. But, he's trying to watch what Lucic does to read the play. Lucic is a guy more likely to take the puck down the wall than fire it on net and have Horton charge for a rebound. If Horton charges to the front of the net, Lucic has no outlet from the corner. Horton has to stay in the high slot.TorontoGM wrote:I wouldn't call it a blindeside cause Horton was looking at the pass
Not necessarily directed at you, but for people who are going to use "he shouldn't watch his pass" as a defense.

Well you're right, reading the play isn't his fault. It does look like he turned his head right as Rome layed into him which probably didn't help at all since the hit was high.

Re: biting?!?
Scott Stevens practically made a living with those kind of hits (ok, most were not as late, but otherwise basically identical) so I'm somewhat surprised to see the outrage over this one - not unpleasantly surprised, mind you. Maybe the league is actually going to get serious about stopping these pointless, career-ending hits.

Re: biting?!?
This. Take a look. Stevens/Kariya is what came to my mind when I was watching tonight. Count me as surprised as well for all Rome/Nuck bashing. Its the SC final, I imagine things are pretty fucking intense out there right now. It was definitely a late hit, but not as terrible as Stevens/Kariya (i think i counted 3 full strides by Kariya, did Stevens even get a penalty?) and not a direct hit to the head. Horton (who I hope has a speed recovery and resumes his playing career ASAP) was skating in a dangerous zone and in a vulnerable position, Rome took full advantage. I think the impact of the collision/whiplash and his prior concussion history (it says "2011/01/11 Missed 2 games (undisclosed)", but iirc it was head related?) played a part in him getting KO'd so bad. Misconduct deserved, maybe a game to send a message but then how do you let Raffi on Seabrook go? You suspend Rome your sending all kinds of mixed messages.SharksGM wrote:Scott Stevens practically made a living with those kind of hits.
It's good to see the changes the game is making though, I find it INSANE team physicians let Paul Kariya come back and play in the very same game he was KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS in. UFC/Boxing fighters are suspended from any sort of physical contact for 90+ days if they get KO'd. They send the guy back out 30 minutes later to play in the SC final. He scores a goal and is a hero then, but at what cost? Look at him now, his playing career cut short that was riddled with concussions after the fact. Who knows the quality of life he will have moving forward, I only hope the Bruins learn from how bad they butchered rehabbing Marc Savard

Dirty, late hit by Rome, no question. When has VAN had "cheap" shots before this incident this post-season? Can't recall one at all.
I hope Rome is suspended for the entire series so that a better defensemen in Keith Ballard gets to play.

Re: biting?!?
I don't understand the whole situation when a ref waits until a player is put on a stretcher and leaves the ice before making the call official and deciding on what kind of penalty.
Re: biting?!?
yes you do. ref missed it / choked and then when the spatula comes out he has GOTTA call something.TorontoGM wrote:I don't understand the whole situation when a ref waits until a player is put on a stretcher and leaves the ice before making the call official and deciding on what kind of penalty.
wrt to my personal hate for the the "sewer dirty" (Shaquille O'Neal coined term) 'Nucks: i admit my biases (y'all figured it out anyway), but Raffi Torres' Hansen Brothers'-like play in the CHI set the tone. they might not have BEEN a dirty team before that, but they are now. i think Torres knocked out Seabrook and the team was rewarded so they are trying to embrace this. it is the league's fault for letting him get away with the Seabrook hit that created this monster. the Canucks now think their past failures in the playoffs had EVERYTHING to do with them being too nice or something. they should focus on hockey before they lose control of this series, imo.
finally, we all know late, head hits when we see them live (it is tougher on tv). both the NFL and the NHL are struggling to finally enforce the rules (that they let go for years in order to entertain fans with the big hits) now that we know what we know about the human brain. my guess is that after a few more years adjustment, players, refs, and fans will all have it figured it out and it these late calls / suspensions won't be as big an issue. my two cents. booooo Vancouver.
Re: biting?!?
and i forgot to add that Burke is 100% correct; you are SUPPOSED to watch the puck, that is what the game is all about. saying that guys like Nathan Horton and Brent Seabrook are hot-dogging and skating with their heads down like some hot-shot Pee Wee is insane. these guys are pros and they KNOW when to expect a hit and when to relax their postures after getting rid of the puck.
i don't know how your commentary is up there in the great white north, but down here in the states we are being terribly served by McGuire et. al. (i like Mike Emerck, and Milbury doesn't offend me, but that is it). these guys are trying out to be the American Don Cherry or something. and this Pierre McGuire, my gawd...this guy has the worst instincts i have ever seen. he is so consistently off-base i find he is now my compass. if we are on the same side, i immediately reconsider my position.

Re: biting?!?
That's the thing that sucks about it. Except for the fact that it woke Boston up, in a series they're probably going to lose anyway, there's zero loss for Vancouver.Montreal Canadiens wrote:I hope Rome is suspended for the entire series so that a better defensemen in Keith Ballard gets to play.
Boston, meanwhile, loses the guy who has been their best player all postseason.
Personally, I think the NHL really needs to take a stand here. I probably overreacted last night on FB with the series + 10, but the overall point remains. This is their big stage. The series has already been marred by the biting incident and the national media chooses to focus on that over the fact that the first two games were really good. Now, the league gets a chance to make a statement. Let's see if they do it or not.

Re: biting?!?
I actually use to rag on Pierre quite a bit until I met him personally and then besides when he makes his usual awful Pierre moment, like when he said he likes it when guys are hot, and it doesn't have to be fancy, it just has to be hard.
I still make fun of him for those moments, but he's a nice guy in person, so I've refrained from ragging on him, but he's not one of my favourite broadcasters by any means. Hughson is without a doubt the industry's top dog, and Chris Simpson is pretty solid as well. They are definitely the best tandem out there.
I don't get to hear the USA guys very much, but Emrick and Pang are pretty good as well. Also gotta love Cuthbert and Ferraro. Kevin Weekes and Mark Lee are the absolute worst I've ever heard. What's his name for the Oilers, Kevin Quinn or whatever is pretty bad too.
John Shorthouse is awesome. Better on radio though IMO.

And you can all say what you want but what Brad Marchand did at the end of the game was completely and utterly malicious. Disgusting behavior if you ask me from a fucken ROOKIE.
Re: biting?!?
And nothing will ever come of it. Nobody will bring it up or anything, it will be swept under the rug.
This series is reminding me a lot of the 2 Chicago series' before this year where the Canucks are getting taunted into all the scrums and whacks and hacks after the whistles instead of just focusing on playing between the whistles and their hockey.
Boston is getting away with fucking murder on the ice exactly like Chicago did in previous years.
Kesler, Sedins, Burrows all look frustrated for the first time since 2 years ago against Chicago. Horton hit definitely woke up the Bruins but the Canucks have also played absolutely terribly. Ehrhoff and Edler have been complete crap the last two games, I don't know if it's the jet lag or what, but this Canucks team has been a joke the last 2 games.
I'm glad after Game 5 there is 2 days between Game 5 and 6 as it seems the Canucks need to rest some ailing bodies. Kesler and Hank both look hurt, as does Ehrhoff.
Good thing the home teams are 15-2 in the SCF recently and Canucks have 2 of the remaining 3 games at home. Go canucks, please.

Re: biting?!?
Henrik Sedin's looked hurt since the Nashville series. There's something not right with that cat.
The defense certainly isn't anywhere near the one I saw in Game 7 v. CHI, the NSH series, or the SJ series, that's for sure. But, you're never in trouble until you lose at home. It's true what they say. All that momentum BOS has can stop if VAN scores first in Game 5.

Yeah, Henrik was injured in the NSH series, then with the time off it looked like he healed up for the SJ series obviously, he looked outstanding, now it seems lovely Brad Marchand and Rich Peverley have aggrevated his injury.
In the words of the great Todd McLellan, you are never in trouble until you lose a game on home ice. Didn't work out for his Sharky Sharks, but hopefully Canucks take Game 5 tomorrow night, and then win 1 of 2, hopefully Game 6 in BOS.
