Reasoning: I had 8 defensemen for 6 regular spots, and I'll carry a spare all season. Smaby could get a return with his contract, and I wanted a good 3C/4C that can play a physical game, not be an offensive liability and can take faceoffs. Skille fits that need, isnt injury prone and can fight when necessary. The 4th rounder was thrown in to make the trade work, since Im taking the younger player.

Oh yeah, this. I wanted a decent #6/7D after dumping Kronwall and Rozsival and Smaby fits the bill with his modest salary, good def & con. Skille is a fine #4C but I didn't feel like I was getting 1.6M worth out of him and he's due a raise. Hopefully I can find a replacement in free agency.
