WSH/COL

Post by GM Office Q »

To Washington:

-- Colorado's first round pick (2014)
-- Colorado's second round pick (2015)
-- RFA Ben Bishop (88)

To Colorado:

-- **Washington's first round pick (2015) - top ten protected - included only if 11th overall or lower
-- **Washington's first round pick (2016) - included only if WSH 1st 2015 is 10th overall or higher
-- Semyon Varlamov (72)

For the price of swapping first round draft picks (with some stipulations) and a second rounder, I get the guy I want in net for the next decade. Backstrom is getting older and Bishop's contract is expiring, opening the door for me to go get a star goaltender. Varlamov is an upgrade to either one of those guys. On the other hand, Washington does get a goalie with great consistency and that will fit in the budget. Thanks Tim!

To Colorado:
Semyon Varlamov [72]
Washington's first round pick in 2015 OR Washington's first round pick in 2016*

To Washington:
Ben Bishop [88]
Colorado's first round pick in 2014
Colorado's second round pick in 2015

* -- if Washington's first round pick in 2015 is in the range of the first ten selections, Colorado receives Washington's first round pick in 2016

Varlamov performed better against NJ than the previous four playoffs, and his two (potentially three?) Vezinas speak for themselves, but I decided it was time to make a change and pick up a high consistency goalie. Bishop's probably not good enough to start as many games as Varlamov did during the regular season, but I hope this move will pay off in the playoffs. The eighth overall should get me a solid prospect that will be ready to step into the lineup by 2016 or earlier. Clearing Varly's cap space gives me some flexibility to sign some extensions as well.

Trading my 2015 first (I doubt I'll finish bottom ten) for two second rounders is a gamble, but I do like a couple players in this draft that are projected to go in the early second. I don't know about the strength of next year's draft yet, but I feel like I'm better off with an extra year of developing the prospect.

Unless I'm missing something, COL doesn't own it's 2nd this year.

Guys, you want to fix this so it can go through before the draft starts?

Tim is going to be drafting remotely this weekend so if he wants to just replace the missing 2nd round pick with 'futures' for now that's fine with me.

Okay; the pick will need to be entered, but the first round pick has been changed.

We decided to take the conditions off of the 2015 second round pick. The deal is now:

To Washington:

-- Colorado's first round pick (2014)
-- Colorado's second round pick (2015)
-- RFA Ben Bishop (88)

To Colorado:

-- **Washington's first round pick (2015) - top ten protected - included only if 11th overall or lower
-- **Washington's first round pick (2016) - included only if WSH 1st 2015 is 10th overall or higher
-- Semyon Varlamov (72)
