Offered qualifying offer. If he accepts, will manually edit file to show RFA status. Players with over 100 Greed cannot accept their qualifying offer. Ellington's is 104.

You already know that Julien, but that's for the others.

Ellington will be a RFA.

Ellington conveniently rejected the offer. So he's a RFA, just like you wanted.

Maxim Lapierre - Arbitration
Garnet Exelby - Arbitration

Tomas Filippi - Numbers please
Jani Hakanpaa - Numbers please

What happens with Taylor Ellington who spent all last season as an RFA on my team?
Can I get him cheaper now? Kind of like we do with UFAs that weren't signed for over a year...

Re: Calgary Flames contract offers

Filippi: 2,887,500
Hakanpaa: 3.85M (3.5M base + 350k def. spec)

By the formula, Ellington would be 1.35M. If we do lower the AHL minimum, I'd imagine it would be lower than that. Not sure I can give you anything other than that. We don't have a rule on RFAs. The NHL rule is that you hold his RFA rights until he's 27 or has 7 years played in the NHL. Ellington's only 24.

Awards have been determined in the Garnet Exelby and Maxim Lapierre arbitrations.

Exelby
Length: 1 + TO
GM proposal: 1.52M; comps: Erskine, McLaren, Allen, White, Commodore
Agent proposal: 2.66M; comps: Hejda, Sauer, Orpik

Calgary playoff hero Garnet Exelby. For his timely goal in Game 7 of the Western Conference Final, he should make 5M for next season, but I can't go over what his agent's request was, so unfortunately for Garnet, he'll be underpaid. Both sides made very compelling cases for Exelby. As Exelby's agent notes, if he were to go to free agency, he'd likely be the top defensive defenseman available.

One of the most important parts about Exelby is his 82 LE. On a very young Calgary team, Exelby and Phaneuf are the only two defensemen above 65 LE. In spite of a 40 PE rating, Exelby had only 34 penalty minutes this season in 84 games. In those 84 games, Exelby combined for 397 hits and takeaways. He's a tremendous role player and his value is clear. The midpoint in this case is 2.09M, which I will round down to 2M. That's a fair price for a guy who brings a lot of defensive value and clearly had a positive impact on the Flames' run to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Julien, you can accept/reject this award.

Lapierre
Length: 2+TO
GM proposal: 2.25M; comps: Latendresse, Stewart, Artyukhin, Kaspar
Agent proposal: 3.25M; comps: Armstrong, Bickell, Gaustad, Artyukhin

The curious case of Maxim Lapierre. Both sides are in agreement that Lapierre deserves a raise from his previous salary of 1.9M. Lapierre lines up very closely with Colby Armstrong, who just received 3.25M in arbitration. Not only do they have very similar attributes, but they also had nearly identical stat lines this season. Lapierre had 154 takeaways and dished out 168 hits, while Armstrong had 147 takeaways and 162 hits. Lapierre played 16 more games than Armstrong. Armstrong has more offensive upside than Lapierre, though, as most of Lapierre's OF comes from his stickhandling, while Armstrong has a 70 SH.

An interesting way to look at this case is to look at what guys like Artyukhin and Gaustad received last offseason. Artyukhin, who both cited as a comp, made 2.5M on the open market. The Buffalo GM walked away from Gaustad's arbitration award of 2.5M and he got 3.5M in FA. So, the going rate for Lapierre should be between 2.5-3.25. There are limitations to Lapierre's game, especially his C eligibility with just a 60 FA rating. Lapierre would have gotten well above both proposals with the formula, so Julien lucks out either way. If Lapierre was a LW/RW, I would have ruled right in the middle at 2.75, but that's a hardship on a GM when putting lines together because he's so bad in the dot, so I think that's worth a $100,000 pity discount and an extra $100,000 discount for a lack of offensive skill.

I award Lapierre 2.55M for the next two years with a team option.

Julien, you can accept/reject this award.
