Confirmed, explanation to follow. I refuse to write my normal long winded explanation BEFORE the guy getting the best player does.

I have a strong suspicion that my run to the cup finals last year was built on the backs of a very strong defence, but that I was lacking some firepower up front - and with Kostitsyn leaving, I did not have a single forward with 90+ shooting.

So I looked at some options, teams that might have been interested in one of my top defencemen in exchange, and made offers / had conversations with a few. Nick's desire to blow things up after the playoffs last year made Nichushkin one of the top few targets, and I thought I made a pretty fair offer, though he was not quite convinced.

Until just before free agency, he throws me a curveball by adding a Kotkaniemi for Helenius swap into the mix, completely throwing my free agency plans out the window 😅

I was hesitant of course, but I did just draft Romano (who I expect to match Helenius defensively, albeit weaker offence and faceoffs), and it's not as though Kotkaniemi is old or bad - indeed, he can hit better than most of my top forwards (another concern, following JVR's departure).

We had some cap concerns, so ended up waiting for the RFAs to be done, and decided the 500k balances things enough.

Ultimately, I sacrifice some of my depth (which I still have) for talent. Thanks Nick, you [censored]

I said I was changing the core, and I was committed to it. Ultimately, Eichel was the easier move somehow, as a mostly 1-for-1 change was made, for one of the highest offensive weapons in Matthews, albeit in one of the best equal OFF/DEF players in Eichel.

Nuke had a lot of interest early, but nothing was making sense outside Detroit floating around some every-changing pieces. I am the one that normally says if you trade the best player, you lose the deal, but I also have lost three straight first rounds, so I mean, why listen to myself?

The move gives me the best D core I've had, well, ever here. So that speaks for itself. I still very much like my offense, and still have 2 +90 shooters on both lines in MDC and Matthews. And regardless of what I would expect could be additional moves since I do that all the time, I also had Helenius, who I can expect to be a top line C for years to come.

I doubt I'll have a deal in talks as long as this one, but hit me up after this years 1st round exit and maybe you too can break the record when I move on from MDC.

For the record, 3/6 players in this deal had CON drops reset.
