To MTL: Nick Bjugstad(82) and Patrik Berglund(71)
To CGY: Sam Gagner(76) and Maxim Lapierre(69)
I thought I would've been able to have Berglund produce at the pace he once did in St.Louis when he centered Marty St.Louis and Marian Gaborik but to no avail, I had to use him as a 3rd line center mostly. I think Sam Gagner will do a better job on my first two lines, plus he can also kill penalties. Lapierre is nowhere near what Nick Bjugstad is but I think he will be useful as a bottom 6 forward. With the recent addition of Wayne Simmonds, I think I've improved the overall physicality of this team.
Best player of the deal is Bjugstad, hands down, but this deal now gives me a lineup which I'm proud of without touching the top 4 on defense that I've built.
That was a loooooong talk between Brad and I. He made me part ways with what might be my best player, let's just hope this works out well for the both of us.
Pleasure doing business with you, man.

Re: Calgary/Montreal
Along with the PIT deal, this was an incredibly difficult deal for me to make. Gagner was one of my prized possessions. Felt like the move to trade Cammalleri for Gagner was one of my best trades as the decision maker of the Habs.
The big picture is I feel Bjugstad can play in a lot more roles (or positions) than Gagner. I feel Gagner is pretty limited to a scoring role only. With Bjugstad, you could play him in PP, on a grind line, or even trap line. Lapierre was a big part of my 3rd line, strong 7+ rating, but is a one-trick pony. He's going to hit you. That's it. Lower CON than Berglund as well. Berglund is also a one-trick pony, but with a bit more intangibles I feel. Way better in faceoffs, can probably still PK, and a much better contract long-term.
I like the fact if need be (say games against tougher + bigger opponents like WPG, CAR, PIT) I can throw out a pretty devastating scoring and hitting line (Kostitsyn-Backes-Bjugstad) and still have Savard and Hemsky making magic together.
The Kuznetsov trade worked out for both clubs, so hoping this one does as well. GL Julien.
If approved, can we input this on January 5th after our games?
