Islanders Draft Recap 2016

With the 2016 Draft wrapped up in Buffalo, New York, the Islanders didn\'t have to travel far to bring the newest members of the Islanders family to Brooklyn.

They did have to wait a while to make their first pick and they didn\'t waste it. The Islanders picked at #27 #36 #96 #156 and #186. A few picks were moved for other players in previous moves but some of the biggest moves that Isles GM Chris did was to bring some very strong offensive help to help out young phenom Connor McDavid - #1st overall 2015. Trades that bring in Alex Ovechkin and Dan Heatley.

For the draft the Isle selected a center late in the 1st round with Russian German Rubtsov joining the team. That was followed shortly after with the teams second round pick to take tender Dylan Wells. It was an interesting selection as the GM has also made a move to bring in Marc-Andre Fleury from Ottawa in a deal that saw Chris Gibson go the opposite way.

Rubstov looks to be a strong two way center and with some time on the farm should develop nicely in that direction. Wells is likely to see time down the road but it will be interesting to see where he fills in longer term as Fleury has a reasonable contract length of 5 years but is getting up in age and likely yet to see the best part of his career.

The team had to wait till round 4 despite some unsuccessful attempts to get a 3rd rounder, they selected Center Sam Steel from the Regina Pats of the WHL. Sam has some offense to him and dispite his small stature he should develop into a nice role player for the team.

In rounds 6 and 7 the team took a pair of Russian defencemen Nadir Islyamov, and Ivan Kovalyov. All in all it was a busy draft for GM Chris as he has certianly altered the look of the team going into training camp. The focus will now turn to the free agents and you can expect some movement but not a lot as there is not much space after signing Ovechkin and Ryan Whitney. More on the draft day deals later!
