Hey everybody, We're all gonna get paid!

As one of my first tasks as one of your new EHEC overlords, Adam had me research some defensive statistics for both forwards and defensemen. The goal of this study was to find a few suitable benchmarks for our more defensively inclined players. E5 bonuses currently in place are designed to be achieved by offensive talents and star players. Collectively, we decided to examine hits per game (H/G) and takeaway-giveaway differential per game. I collected these two statistics for all players who competed in 42 games or more during the 2010-11 EHEC season.

I had Excel run sorting and data analysis functions to determine per game distributions. In our discussions Adam and I took care to ensure that the right amount of players were compensated for their abilities. At the same time, we endeavored to make the new standards rigorous enough to keep this set of salaries in check. Listed below are the four new E5 bonuses available to our players, two for forwards and the same two statistics for defensemen.

FOR FORWARDS: 1.25 H/G (min. 42 games played) and 0.25 (T-G)/G (min. 42)
FOR DEFENSE: 1.5 H/G (min. 42 games played) and 0.50 (T-G)/G (min. 42)

Accomplishing any of these bonuses is still worth $250,000 each, with a maximum of eight bonuses to be earned by any one single player. Each individual bonus can only be received once, so your player will have to be well-rounded to make the full two million in bonuses. These newly minted options will be applied to the statistics of E5 players starting with the just completed 2010-11 season and onward.

Adam has already begun factoring in these new bonuses with changes to be reflected in the next file update. Use this thread to rip me a new, well you know.

Key Figures:
*Nearly two-thirds of forwards failed to break even on takeaway-giveaway differential.
*Over an 82 game season a forward would have to crack 100 hits to earn the bonus. The bar is even higher for defensemen.
*Dan Girardi is receiving two to boost his salary for me to 2.4 million!

To piggyback this a little bit, I went through and, as Tommy said, applied these to the players who reached these bonuses. 21 players achieved both. 9 achieved only the HG/G bonus and 3 achieved only the TA-GA ratio bonus.

Tommy did all of the legwork, and there definitely was a lot of it to be done to create a fair number. What he found was that just 36.1% of all forwards had a positive TA-GA ratio. From what I calculated, 11 forwards received both bonuses, while 3 forwards received only HG/G and 2 forwards received only TA-GA ratio. 9 defensemen got both, while 6 got only HG/G and 0 got only TA-GA.

In the end, all of this will regulate because E5 bonuses are going to push players in to higher percentage brackets in the formula and give them a smaller base salary increase than they would have received otherwise. So, everything really should even out. It's just a matter of using E5 bonuses to compensate players for defense as well as offense.

To clear up what Tommy said, players can get a maximum of 8 bonuses now with these other two added. This will be known as the Milan Lucic rule because he is the only player who got all 8. It would have been unfair to ignore the HG/G and TA-GA bonuses for him for reaching 6. So, total bonus amounts are capped at 2M now. Except in the case of the 2010 Draft Class where their bonus amounts are still capped at their draft slot.


One thing that the increase in E5 bonuses may do is force us to re-evaluate the percentages in the formula chart. Some of the players are going to have hefty contracts. I don't see this as a bad thing because it increases the interest in free agency, since so few players actually go to FA in the league. But, if it becomes a problem, we will look at it again.

No. Except for Detroit's Brian Lashoff, this amendment to E5 bonuses did not affect any of the contracts that have been done from the formula or from arbitration. Really, these are designed to regulate 2010 Entry Draft ELCs and fix contracts like Lucic's or others from the misguided 30% rule.

No players signed over the last month will be eligible for any E5 bonuses in the future.

i am not as convinced this is a problem as you. we need not rehash what i think is your quixotic effort to EXACTLY simulate the NHL, but i will say (IMO) the reason i think we have less FA than in real life is we make more trades than they do. there is practically nobody letting really good players walk....we are being more proactive and trying to get SOMETHING for these guys in trade instead of just losing them. maybe it is because we really don't have to look a guy in the eye and tell him he is traded, or we don't have to worry about negative fan reaction. i dunno; just my guess.

Jesus every time I log in my players are getting paid more. We now have the Milan Lucic rule but I've said before this whole E5 thing should be refereed as the anti Boston Bruins rule.

Ok, capped at $2-million bonuses per player. Anything else those greedy M.F.'s in the union want?

Eh, I'm used to the rules changing to put others at my level. It gets frustrating though.

The contracts are only as retarded as the players.

NHL players are often not the sharpest tools in the shed.
